Prep roundup: Dragons defeat Yorktown, to honor first responders on 9-11

Rylee Hurst scored twice and Tylar Whitaker, Shaylee Frank and Hailey Pardieck added tallies for the New Palestine girls soccer team in a 5-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference victory over visiting Yorktown Thursday.

The Dragons, who were co-champions of the HHC last season with rival Mt. Vernon, are 3-0 in conference play this season and 6-1 overall.

Abby Lambdin and Nevaeh Gebhart had two assists each. Whitaker also had an assist.

The Dragons continue HHC play Saturday at Shelbyville (4-3, 1-1) and welcome the rival Marauders in a special game on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

New Palestine is inviting local first responders to attend the match for free for its 9-11 game against Mt. Vernon.

They will be honored in between the junior varsity and varsity match.

Festivities for first responders are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the New Palestine High School soccer field.

Marauders defeat Trojans

Hannah Monroe had two goals and Kylie Brandes had a goal and three assists in Mt. Vernon’s 6-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference girls soccer victory at New Castle Thursday.

Kat Simmons, Reagan Britt, Jaicee Cole had goals and Nahia McNamar had a pair of assists.

Mt. Vernon is 5-0-2 overall and 3-0 in the HHC. They play host to Lawrence North (4-2-1) Monday before a matchup between last season’s co-HHC champions on Wednesday at New Palestine (6-1, 3-0).

New Castle dropped to 1-6 and 0-4 in the HHC.

Boys soccer

Mt. Vernon moves to 4-0 in HHC play

Mt. Vernon’s boys soccer team remained unbeaten in Hoosier Heritage Conference play with a 4-1 victory at Yorktown Thursday.

Charlie Cole and Drew Lynch had two goals each. Ethan Ludlow had three assists and Brady Webber had an assist.

The Marauders scored three first-half goals. They are 5-2-1 overall and 4-0 in the HHC.

Will Keppler had six saves. Joe Buchanan had three.

Yorktown dropped to 2-3 and 2-2.

The Marauders continue league play Thursday with a home match against rival Greenfield-Central (0-5, 0-2).

Boys tennis

Dragons victorious over Golden Bears

New Palestine’s boys tennis team defeated host Shelbyville 4-1 Thursday to improve to 4-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.

Moses Haynes and Max Havel needed three sets to win the No. 1 doubles match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, as did No. 1 singles player Arjomand Khokhar 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.

No. 2 singles player Joey McPike won 6-3, 6-1 and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Andrew Hahn and Carson Rush won 6-0, 6-3.

No. 3 singles player Brady Torzewski lost by default due to injury while leading 5-0 in the opening set.

Overall, the Dragons are 9-1. They play host to Lawrence Central Wednesday.

Marauders beat Tigers

Mt. Vernon’s boys tennis team picked up a Hoosier Heritage Conference win on the road at Yorktown Thursday.

The Marauders won 4-1.

Girls volleyball

Royals win conference match

Eastern Hancock’s volleyball team swept host Blue River Valley Thursday.

The Royals won 3-0 by set scores of 25-20, 25-21, 27-25.

Ellie Meyer just missed a triple-double with nine kills, 11 digs and 15 assists to go with three blocks.

Kaitlyn Lowes led the attack with 18 kills.

Alana Eastridge had three service aces and 20 digs. Briar Vancamp had 17 assists and Hayden Collins added 10 digs.

Eastern Hancock improved to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-Eastern Conference. Blue River dropped to 3-4 and 1-2.

The Royals continue MEC play on the road Tuesday at Union (2-5, 0-2).

Marauders handle Delta

Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team swept visiting Delta in a Hoosier Heritage Conference match Thursday.

The Marauders won 3-0 by set scores of 25-6, 29-27, 25-12.

Jaycee Jones led in kills with 11.

Avery Delello and Sierra Holverson each had four service aces. Olivia Johnson had three blocks.

Aubry Dowling had a team-high 18 digs. Setter Ava Whitmore had 10 and 29 assists.

Delta dropped to 2-4 and 0-3 in the HHC.

Mt. Vernon is 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

The Marauders travel to a non-conference match Tuesday at Brebeuf (7-3).

Girls golf

Dragons win at Maple Creek

New Palestine’s girls golf team defeated Cathedral 175-198 at Maple Creek Country Club Thursday.

Katie Kelley led the way with a nine-hole round of 39. Lauren Deering followed with a 42. Lily Kirchner and Matti Tiede-White followed with a 45 and 49, respectively.

New Palestine will compete at the Connersville Invitational today.
