Mt. Vernon’s girls volleyball team dropped the first two sets but came back to win the last three for a 3-2 victory at Southport Tuesday.

Mt. Vernon (8-3) won by set scores of 20-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-11, 15-12.

Outside hitter Sierra Holverson and setter Ava Whitmore each recorded double-doubles.

Holverson had a team-high 18 kills to go with 15 digs.

Whitmore had 54 assists and 12 digs. She was also part of three blocks and had three service aces.

Alivia Morgan had 17 kills. Olivia Johnson had 10 kills and four blocks, including two solos.

Aubry Dowling had 20 digs and four of the team’s 10 service aces.

Avery Delello had 17 digs. Makenna Thompson recorded 14 digs. Leah Kay was part of two blocks.

Southport dropped to 8-5.

G-C wins HHC opener at Delta

Greenfield-Central’s girls volleyball team improved to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 3-0 victory at Delta Tuesday.

The Cougars won by set scores of 25-22, 25-17, 25-20.

Delta dropped to 2-3 and 0-2 in the HHC.

A balanced Cougar attack was led by Madison Sonsini with nine kills. Alex Muegge contributed six and Rilee Roland had five. Middle hitters Lili Jeffries and Harper Holden had four kills each.

Muegge and Addi Rugenstein both had two service aces.

Jeffries, Holden and Sonsini were each part of three blocks. Holden had two solos.

Roland had 14 digs and Rugenstein added seven. Setter Makenna Rankins had 24 assists.

Royals improve to 2-0 in MEC

The Eastern Hancock volleyball team won for the second straight time in Mid-Eastern Conference play with a 3-0 victory over visiting Shenandoah Tuesday.

The Royals won by set scores of 25-19, 26-24, 25-13.

Ellie Meyer had 10 kills and 12 assists. Kaitlyn Lowes had 10 kills.

Alana Eastridge had a team-high 13 digs and had four of the Royals 16 service aces.

Cami Knight had five aces. Briar Vancamp had 18 assists.

Easter Hancock is 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the MEC. Shenandoah dropped to 4-6 and 0-1.

Boys tennis

Dragons beat Waldron, 3rd at Noblesville

New Palestine’s boys tennis team improved to 8-1 with a 4-1 victory over previously-unbeaten Waldron Tuesday.

There were a number of tight matches in the contest held at New Palestine High School.

At No. 1 singles, Arjomand Khokhar won 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Brady Torzewski dropped a three-setter 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 Joey McPike won 7-5, 6-3.

The Dragon doubles teams had an easier time of it.

At No. 1, Moses Haynes and Max Havel won 6-3, 6-0. The No. 2 group of Andrew Hahn and Carson Rush won 6-0, 6-0.

On Saturday, the Dragons finished third at the Noblesville Invitational.

Noblesville, ranked No. 20 in the current Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association poll (IHSTECA) won with 30 points. No. 12 Evansville Memorial had 27 and the Dragons, ranked No. 26, scored 22. No. 29 Mt. Vernon was fourth with 20 and No. 25 Plainfield scored 19.

Haynes and Havel went 3-0 to win at No. 1 doubles, beating a tandem from Evansville Memorial in the championship match.

Khokhar was fourth at No. 1 singles. The Hahn-Rush team also finished fourth at No. 2 doubles.

The Dragons were fifth at both No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles, splitting matches at No. 2 with McPike and Joel Dorval and at No. 3 with Torzewski and Tyler Walter.

Cougars lose close one at Delta

Greenfield-Central fell to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 3-2 loss at Delta Tuesday.

The Cougars won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

Nathan Roberts won 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot. Alex Michalek won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2.

Both doubles matches were close. Luke Sitzman and Jacob Welch lost at No. 1 7-5, 7-5. Nolan Frye and Kasen Jarnecke dropped their match at No. 2 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Ethan Ortwein lost 6-1, 6-1.

Girls soccer

Marauders win big in HHC play

Seven different players scored goals and five different players had assists for Mt. Vernon’s girls soccer team in an 8-0 win over visiting Shelbyville Tuesday.

Reagan Britt had two goals and Kylie Brandes, Jaicee Cole, Nahia McNamar, Talaya Broaders, Taylor Bastin, and Kat Simmons all scored.

Hannah Monroe, Brandes and Bastin each had two assists. Addy Nielsen and Britt also had assists.

The Marauders are 4-0-2 overall and 2-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. Shelbyville dropped to 3-3 and 1-1.

Dragons blank host Flashes

New Palestine’s girls soccer team improved to 5-1 overall with a 3-0 win at Franklin Central (5-4) Tuesday.

Tylar Whitaker had a pair of goals and Abby Lambdin had the other.

Hailey Pardieck and Rylee Hurst distributed assists.

In goal, McKenzie Hacker had five saves and Adalynn Eakin had four.

Cougars drop match to Arabians

Pendleton Heights opened scoring in the first half and added three more goals in the second to defeat Greenfield-Central 4-0 in Pendleton Tuesday.

G-C dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. Pendleton Heights is 4-0 and 1-0.

Girls golf

Royals 5th at MEC

Eastern Hancock’s girls golf team finished fifth at the Mid-Eastern Conference tournament held Saturday at Maplewood Golf Course in Muncie.

The Royals had a team score of 451. Wapahani won with a 365, followed by Shenandoah (397), Monroe Central (402), and Union Modoc (445).
