Tennis Roundup: G-C wins Franklin Invitational

Greenfield-Central’s boys tennis team won the Franklin Invitational Saturday.

It’s the second straight year the Cougars have won the tournament.

G-C defeated Mooresville 5-0 in the quarterfinals and host Franklin 4-1 in the semis. The Cougars defeated Heritage Christian 4-1 in the championship match.

Nathan Roberts (No. 1 singles), Alex Michalek (No. 2 singles) and Ethan Ortwein (No. 3 singles) all went 3-0 with three straight-set victories.

Michalek lost just two games the entire tournament.

The No. 2 doubles team of Nolan Frye and Kasen Jarnecke also went 3-0 with three straight set wins. They lost just six games in their three matches.

The No. 1 doubles team of Luke Sitzman and Jacob Welch won against Mooresville, lost against Franklin and retired with a 5-4 lead against Heritage Christian.

Mt. Vernon goes 1-1 at CG

Mt. Vernon’s boys tennis team went 1-1 in matches played at Saturday’s Center Grove Invitational.

The Marauders defeated Perry Meridian 5-0 before losing to Center Grove 5-0.

In singles player, Manny Downs (No. 1), Gavin Weaver (No. 2) and Tate Cougill (No. 3) all went 1-1 on the day.

In doubles, Max Orelup/Bryndan Wylie (No. 1) and Ethan Erdos/Eli Muterspaugh (No. 2) also split matches.
