Earlier this week on social media, New Palestine senior boys basketball standout Julius Gizzi announced his plans to play collegiately at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Gizzi was an all-state selection in 2023-24 and an Indiana Junior All-Star. He finished second in the state in scoring at 28.9 points per game.
Indiana Wesleyan is traditionally one of the top NAIA programs in the nation. Last year’s Wildcats team finished 29-6 and reached the NAIA quarterfinals.
Girls volleyball
Marauders win home opener
Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team won its home opener and improved to 3-1 overall with a 3-0 victory over Heritage Christian Thursday.
The Marauders won by set scores of 25-10, 25-10, 25-21.
Jaycee Jones had 13 kills. Alivia Morgan was part of six blocks.
The Marauders had 11 service aces, led by Aubry Dowling with three. Setter Ava Whitmore had 25 assists and seven digs. Sierra Holverson had eight digs.
Cougars defeat Greensburg
Greenfield-Central’s volleyball team swept Greensburg 3-0 Wednesday at Greenfield-Central High School.
The Cougars won three competitive games including a marathon third set. Final set scores were, 25-23, 25-19, 34-32.
Madison Sonsini, Rilee Roland and Alex Muegge all recorded double-doubles.
Sonsini had 14 kills and 10 digs. Roland had 12 kills, 18 digs, along with two service aces. Muegge had 10 kills, 13 digs and three service aces.
Addi Rugenstein also had 11 digs.
Setter Makenna Rankins had 33 assists. Harper Holden and Lili Jeffries had two blocks each.
Greenfield-Central improved to 2-1. Greensburg dropped to 1-1.
Royals suffer first loss
Eastern Hancock’s volleyball team dropped to 5-1 with a 3-1 loss at Connersville Thursday.
The Royals lost by set scores of 25-14, 10-25, 25-20, 25-16.
Boys tennis
Cougars open with 5-0 win
Greenfield-Central opened its boys tennis season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Lawrence Central Thursday.
All five wins were straight sets and the Cougars won all but two games.
Nathan Roberts and Alex Michalek at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, won 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 3, Ethan Ortwein won 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, Luke Sitzman and Jacob Welch won 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Nolan Frye and Kasen Jarnecke won 6-0, 6-1.
New Pal wins HHC opener
New Palestine’s boys tennis team improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 5-0 win at Yorktown Thursday.
All five wins were in straight sets. Arjomand Khokhar won the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-0. Brady Torzewski won at No. 2 6-4, 6-4 and Carson Rush won at No. 3 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, Moses Haynes and Max Havel won 6-0, 6-2. Luke Bartusek and Andrew Hahn won 6-0, 6-4.
Girls golf
New Pal splits three-way
New Palestine’s girls golf team placed second of three teams in a meet at Southern Dunes Golf Course Thursday.
Southport won with a score of 184. New Palestine shot 204 and Lawrence Central finished with 224.
Lily Kirchner led the Dragons with a 45.
Boys soccer
Marauders fall to Warriors
Mt. Vernon’s boys soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Warren Central Thursday.
The Marauders are 1-2 on the season. Warren Central improved to 1-1
Girls soccer
G-C loses at Roncalli
Greenfield-Central (1-3) gave up two goals in each half and lost 4-0 at Roncalli Wednesday.
Caroline Felver had 15 saves. Abbey Malet had four saves.
