Boys cross country roundup: Marauders 1st, Cougars 3rd in Hokum Karem

Mt. Vernon placed first and Greenfield-Central finished third at the 16-team Plainfield Hokum Karem Saturday.

Westfield was the runner-up.

The Mt. Vernon pair of Caden Cassada and Landon Willis finished third in the six-mile, two-person relay. Cooper Hunziker and Brayden Strantz placed sixth and Ahmed Saleh and Austin Baugh finished eighth.

Mt. Vernon averaged just over five minutes per mile for its top three pairs and their fourth pair of Xaiden Jenson and Matthew Cousar took 11th place.

It was Mt. Vernon’s third straight win in the event.

G-C’s top pair, David Wasson and Braylon Mumaugh finished seventh in 30:49. Mumaugh ran his three minutes in 15:03. Cougars Henry Rahe and Peter Hummel were 14th (31:24). Jack Wait and Otto Sickels placed 21st (32:03).

Dragons compete at Cleland Invite

In the team’s first meet of the season, New Palestine boys cross country raced at the John Cleland Invitational, held at Northview Christian Church in Carmel.

Freshman Carson Cooper was 80th overall with a time of 13:57.9 in the 4K race. Frosh Mike Bauer placed 101st in 14:10.8. Senior Gavin Smith was 106th in 14:11.6. Junior Sam Ragsdale placed 185th in 14:56.1. Frosh Gabe Silvey was 218th in 15:13.

There were 589 runners in the race.

Scoring was broken down into two categories freshmen/sophomores and juniors/seniors.

New Palestine was 13th out of 19 in the freshman/sophomore meet and 14th of 16 in the junior/senior race.

Royals compete at Monroe

Eastern Hancock did not have enough runners to have a team score, but did have four boys cross country runners compete in the Meister Family Memorial Run in Parker City, hosted by Monroe Central High School on Saturday.

The Royals were led by an 18th place finish from Caden Powers. He ran the 5K race in 19:47.8. Andrew Metz was 24th in 20:19.9. Davis Decker placed 58th (22:56.5) and Jud West was 84th (26:41.9).

New Haven won the team event with 58 points, led by individual champion Bryan Garcia (17:15.9).
