Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central boys cross country teams opened their seasons Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

The Marauders placed third of 39 teams. Greenfield-Central finished 17th.

Evansville Reitz won with 79 points. Bloomington North had 96 and Mt. Vernon scored 116. Greenfield-Central had a total of 522.

Portage’s Shane Conroy was the fastest individual on the 5K course with a time of 15:52.7.

Mt. Vernon senior Ahmed Saleh was sixth and junior Austin Baugh finished 15th to lead all local runners.

Saleh finished with a time of 16:34.4. Baugh ran a time of 16:51.9.

Mt. Vernon senior Brayden Strantz and junior Caden Cassada were 24th and 25th, respectively. Strantz clocked in at 17:02.9. Cassada had a time of 17:04.

The fifth scoring Marauder was senior Landon Willis, 51st in 17:31.4. Others in Mt. Vernon’s top seven included junior Cooper Hunziker, 55th in 17:52.4, and senior Matthew Cousar, 58th in 17:43.

Greenfield-Central was led by senior Peter Hummel, who was 82nd overall with a time of 18:03.2.

Cougar freshman John Wait was 94th in 18:11.7. Other top five scorers for the Cougars were, junior David Wasson (114th, 18:30.8), sophomore Braylon Mumaugh (121st, 18:43.7) and sophomore Bryce Cotterman (139th, 18:53.9).

Freshman Otto Sickels (154th, 19:05.3) and senior Benjamin Flora (220th, 20:04.9) rounded out G-C’s top seven.

There were 381 runners in the varsity race.

Girls volleyball

Eastern Hancock wins Morristown Classic

Eastern Hancock’s volleyball team won four matches, all in straight sets, to win Saturday’s’s Morristown Opening Classic.

The Royals picked up 2-0 wins over Hauser (25-4, 25-15), Jac-Cen-Del (25-16, 25-21), Northeastern (25-18, 25-21) and Rising Sun (25-16, 25-7).

It was Eastern Hancock’s first time winning the tournament.

Kaitlyn Lowes had 36 kills, 12 service aces and 15 digs. Ellie Meyer hit .425 with 22 kills, 43 assists, nine aces and 14 digs. Libero Alana Eastridge had 31 digs.

Dragons win opener at Scecina

After dropping a close first set, New Palestine won the final three in a 3-1 victory at Scecina Saturday.

The Dragons won by set scores of 28-30, 25-17, 25-22, 25-11.

Hayden Ramsey had 18 kills, six blocks, three service aces and four digs. Libero Azure Flagle had 21 digs and three aces. Setter Sam Gooding had 44 assists, seven digs, four kills and two aces. Defensive specialist Kyndra Monteith had 10 digs and two aces. Outside hitter Natalie Sevier had 14 digs and nine kills. Outside hitter Josie Corbett had eight kills.

Caylee Brown contributed seven kills and Elena Cook had five kills.

“We built some character [Saturday] and I’m so proud of how we battled,” New Palestine coach Kelli Gabehart said. “The first set was back and forth and very competitive. We bounced back and took the next three sets. Scecina is a talented squad with some great outsides. We did a nice job staying composed and sticking together. Great win for us.”

Cougars defeat Waldron

Greenfield-Central’s volleyball team won its season and home opener Saturday.

The Cougars beat Waldron 3-0 with set scores of 25-10, 25-10, 25-9.

G-C had 18 service aces. Alex Muegge and Rilee Roland had five each.

Muegge had a team-high eight kills. Roland had seven kills and five digs. Harper Holden had six kills and setter Makenna Rankins had 29 assists.

Marauders open with road win

Mt. Vernon won its season-opening match at Greenwood Saturday, 3-0, by set scores of 25-14, 25-17, 25-11.

Sierra Holverson had 11 kills and eight digs, both team highs. Jaycee Jones had 10 kills and Alivia Morgan added nine.

Setter Ava Whitmore had 33 assists. Vizma Erkmanis added seven digs.

Girls cross country

Cougars are 16th, Marauders place 32nd

In the Valley Cross Kickoff on Terre Haute’s LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, Greenfield-Central’s girls team finished 16th and Mt. Vernon placed 32nd.

Led by sophomore Josie Kinnaman’s 12th place finish in 20:00 on the 5K course, the Cougars scored 519 points.

Carmel won with 37 points and Lake Central was second, led by individual champion Macey Thompson (18:58), with 69.

Following Kinnaman for G-C, sophomore Adalyn Cole placed 88th (22:46), junior Kendall Barrett was 132nd (23:29), senior Lexie Copeland finished 164th (24:08), and junior Taylor Cooksey was the No. 5 runner in 210th (25:06).

Sophomore Harper Rahe placed 220th (25:31) and junior Addison Gordon finished 236th (25:52).

Mt. Vernon competed with five runners and was led by sophomore Kendall Cagnet (152nd, 23:59), followed by sophomore Brooklyn Harris (202nd, 24:50), sophomore Mikella Rentfrow (209th, 25:05), senior Ella Sinn (269th, 26:47) and sophomore Jessica Iserloth (297th, 28:14).

There were 361 runners in the race.

Boys soccer

Late goals give HSE win over MV

No. 14 Hamilton Southeastern’s boys soccer team scored two goals in the final 20 minutes and defeated Mt. Vernon 3-1 Saturday in the season-opening match for both programs at Mt. Vernon High School Saturday.

Trailing 1-0, Mt. Vernon tied it with a Rylan Vinard goal, assisted by Ethan Ludlow.

Cougars drop opener

Greenfield-Central’s boys soccer team dropped its season-opening match at Lawrence North Saturday, 5-0.

The Wildcats broke open a close match with four second-half goals.

Dragons win opener at Eastern

In the season-opening match for both teams at Eastern Hancock Saturday morning, New Palestine’s boys tennis team defeated the Royals 4-1.

New Palestine swept the singles matches with victories from Arjomand Khokar (6-0, 6-0), Joey McPike (7-6, 7-5) and Brady Torzewski (6-2, 6-0).

New Pal’s Moses Haynes and Max Havel won at No. 1 doubles (6-3, 6-1).

Dragons shoot 331, place 4th at Lapel

At the Edgewood Golf Club, the location for the regional tournament later this season, New Palestine finished fourth in an 18-team field with a score of 331. Mt. Vernon placed 10th with a 363 and Greenfield-Central was 18th at 470.

Noblesville claimed the first two spots with a 289 and a 316. Hamilton Southeastern was third with a 327. Noblesville’s Josie Kelley was the individual winner with a round of 69.

Lauren Deering led New Palestine with a 78. Katie Kelley shot a 79 and Lily Kirchner finished with an 83. Matti Tiede-White carded a 91 and Janie Hamilton finished with a 97.

Izzy VanHeel led Mt. Vernon with an 85. The next four Marauders were two strokes within each other. Marissa Miner shot a 92. Natalie Miner and Kylie Hyde each shot 93s and Gigi Avers finished with a 94.

Greenfield-Central was led by Tanessa O’Neal with a 114. Kynsey Hasty shot 115. Della Hedge carded a 120, followed by Kate Baker (121) and Ally Wilson (122).

Girls soccer

Cougars finish third in tournament

Greenfield-Central’s girls soccer team split matches and finished third in the 11th Annual G-C Kickin’ For Cancer Tournament Saturday.

On the school’s new artificial turf field, the Cougars opened with a 3-0 opening-round loss to eventual tournament champion, Class 2A No. 7 Lawrenceburg.

In the consolation round, G-C defeated Warren Central 9-0.

Paige McCarley had four goals and two assists. Ainsley Robinson had a goal and an assist. Chaney Brown, Tessa Joyner, Chloe Gardner and Lucy Blanton each had one goal. Loren Bewley had a pair of assists. Aubrey Bush and Carly Means each had an assist.
