GREENFIELD
Douglas Markham, 84 of Greenfield, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024, at Springhurst Health Campus in Greenfield. He was born on October 24, 1939, in Evansville, Indiana to the late Douglas Markham & Loretta (Cline) Markham. Doug graduated from Bosse High School in Evansville with the Class of 1956. He went on to further his education at Evansville College, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1962.
Professionally, Doug dedicated his expertise to Naval Avionics in Indianapolis, where he excelled as a Managing Electrical Engineer, retiring in 1983. After retirement, he and a few of his colleagues continued to work contracts with the U.S. Navy with SDA (Systems Design & Analysis. Doug’s life was rich not only in professional accomplishments but also in personal joy and fulfillment. He recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Janet. Doug had a profound appreciation for nature. In his neighborhood, he was affectionately known as the “deer whisperer,” as he was known to provide the deer with feed from his backyard deck. His love for nature extended to his old 5-acre property near Mt. Comfort, which he tended to often with his antique Ford Tractor, a pastime that brought him great satisfaction and peace.
Doug is survived by his wife, Janet; his nephews, Chris (Penny) Ash, Tony Ash, and Randy McCool; and his nieces, Angel (Marty) Higdon, Sherleen Irby, and Selena Renee McCool. Doug was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Donna Sue McCool and Tonya Ash.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2024, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 2:00pm. Cremation will follow services.
