TIPTON — Matched up against state-ranked teams for the second time in as many days, Mt. Vernon’s girls golf team placed fifth in the 12-team Tipton Invitational at Tipton Municipal Golf Course Wednesday.

The Marauders shot a 370 and were led by Izzy Van Heel’s round of 79, which was good enough to tie for sixth individually.

Westfield and Carmel swept the first four spots. The Shamrocks’ Gold team won with a 300, led by individual medalist Addi Kooi with a 67. Carmel A shot a 321, followed by Westfield Green with a 344 and Carmel B with a 367.

In the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association poll, Westfield is ranked No. 2 and Carmel is No. 8.

Following VanHeel for the Marauders, Marissa Miner shot 91, Zoey Gaw finished with a 99 and Natalie Miner and Guinevere Williams each carded 101s.

In a tournament Tuesday at Hamilton Southeastern, won by Carmel and included Westfield and No. 6 HSE, the Marauders were again the highest finishing unranked team, placing sixth out of 11 squads.

Mt. Vernon returns to action next Tuesday with a tri-meet against Lawrence Central and Beech Grove.
