William H. Henley: A Life of Service and Leadership

William H. Henley, affectionately known as Bill, passed away leaving behind a legacy of exceptional service, leadership, and commitment to his community and profession. Bill was a cornerstone of the Indianapolis Power &Light Company (IPL), where he dedicated nearly 46 years of his life, significantly shaping the company and its operations.

Bill began his illustrious career at IPL in 1972, where he held various engineering positions. His profound expertise and dedication quickly propelled him into the Rate Department in 1978 as a Research Analyst. Over the years, Bill’s roles evolved, demonstrating his versatile leadership and deep understanding of the industry. He was promoted to Supervisor of the Rate Division in 1979, and by 1988, he was the Manager of Rates and Regulations. In 2002, Bill assumed the role of Vice President of Rates &Regulations, and in 2009, he became the Vice President of Corporate Affairs. In these roles, he led teams responsible for regulatory affairs, strategic customer accounts, marketing, and markets and risks, and was an integral member of the IPL senior leadership team.

Bill’s academic accomplishments were as impressive as his professional ones. He held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Butler University. He was also a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Indiana.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was a dedicated community servant. He was an active member of various boards, including Indianapolis Power &Light Company, IPALCO Enterprises, Indianapolis Downtown, Inc., and the Indiana Energy Association. His service extended to the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. Bill’s passion for community service was further exemplified by his membership on the 500 Festival Board of Directors, where his love for racing and business acumen made him a valuable contributor.

Bill’s contributions were recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash Award. His intellect, integrity, and compassion earned him immense respect both within IPL and the broader community.

Bill was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marsha, and their three children: Shawn and his wife Cristina, Lindsey and her husband Matt, and Zack and his wife Shauna. He is also survived by his mother, Lorraine, and his sister, Rhonda, and her husband Mark. Bill was a proud grandfather to Jon, Madison, Sofia, Nicholas, Elliot, and Oliver. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Henley. The Henleys were longtime residents of Indianapolis, where they created a warm and loving home.

William H. Henley’s life was marked by a steadfast commitment to excellence, both professionally and personally. His legacy of leadership and service will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the community he served so diligently.
