GREENFIELD — Three members of Meng’s Shaolin Wing Chun in Greenfield, will be traveling to Fujian China for the Shaolin Wing Chun World Championships from Aug. 7-10.

Scott Stapleton, alongside two family members, Rebecca Stapleton and Jacob Buckley, have been selected to represent the United States on the global stage. The three were chosen to be members of this year’s USA Wing Chun National Team.

“This is an incredible opportunity for us,” Scott Stapleton said in a press release.

This year’s World Championship will attract competitors from all continents and will be a historic one. It is the first time a tournament of this level will be held at Fujian’s Southern Shaolin Temple.

“Participating in the martial arts world championship in China is an opportunity for cultural exchange and international collaboration,” Scott Stapleton said in the release.

By competing against skilled athletes from various countries, the trio will have the chance to learn from the different styles of Wing Chun.

“This experience will not only benefit us as individuals but also contribute to the growth and development of the martial arts community of Greenfield as a whole,” Scott Stapleton said in the release.

Scott, the coach and owner of Greenfield’s Meng’s Shaolin Wing Chun, has earned many achievements in various international competitions. At the U.S. International Kuo Shu in 2016 he won the gold medal in advanced Chi Sau. In 2018 he was selected to be on the USAWKF Wing Chun National Team representing the United States in the World Wing Chun Open Competition in Foshan, China where he placed fourth in Siu Nim Tao, fifth place in Chum Kiu, fourth in Baat Jaam Dao, and fourth place in Chi Sau.

Rebecca Stapleton has proven her prowess in martial arts by securing a total of four gold National Championship medals and three silver medals. She also earned one silver and three bronze medals at the Pan American Championships.

Buckley has showcased his skills by winning six gold National Championship medals, four silver medals, and one bronze medal. His performance at the Pan American Championship earned him two silver and one bronze medal.

To help with continued training and the high costs involved in competing at the upcoming World Championships, Meng’s Shaolin Wing Chun has connected with local businesses to secure sponsorships and to hold fundraising events to help financially with travel, training fees, tournament registration fees and other related expenses.

They would like to thank the local businesses who are helping with fundraising this year: Riley Park Tire, Lincoln Square Pancake House, Jersey Mike’s, Wooden Bear Brewing Co., Nutty Mutt Bakery, Daves Meat Market, Lucinda & Sam Anderson, Chicago’s Pizza, Hometown Comics, Hitherto Coffee & Games, Family Bike Chain, the Mug, and Ashley Radtke.
