HANCOCK COUNTY — An Indianapolis man is in the Hancock County Jail under a $50,000 cash bond facing gun and auto theft charges following an incident in the county July 17 after an alert officer noticed something odd about his vehicle.

Kevin Rand Gavarrete, 43, 500 block of East Merrill Street is facing a Level 4 felony count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 5 felony count of auto theft and a Class A misdemeanor count of driving while suspended.

Court records show the initial hearing in the case was conducted in Hancock County Circuit Court July 24. Gavarrete is still listed as an inmate in the county jail and is due back in court for a pretrial conference Thursday, Aug. 15 and a jury trial has been slated for mid-December.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a law enforcement officer with the Greenfield Police Department was on duty July 17 in the 1250 block of N State St when the officer observed a white F-150 with a dark license plate covering a paper tag. The officer conducted a registration check and received a return for a 2021 Ram with “no – model” through the BMV something that is normally associated with stolen vehicles.

When the vehicle pulled out of a gas station, the officer pulled out behind the truck and activated emergency lights and the truck came to a stop on Green Meadows by Auto zone, the report stated.

The driver, identified as Gavarrete told the officer he had recently purchased the truck in Indianapolis but currently had a suspended driver’s license, the report stated. The officer noted he observed in plain view a glass smoking pipe with heavy residue inside of it sitting on the lap of the female passenger.

During a search of the vehicle the report stated officials located a black plastic holster in the driver’s side door, and then a black handgun between the driver’s seat and the center console. A background search was conducted and officials found Gavarrete was convicted as a serious violent felon in possession of a handgun in 2019 along with a number of auto theft charges.

Officials also noted in the report the truck Gavarrete was driving was reported stolen out of Marion County.

Officers field tested narcotic evidence they also found in the truck and it field tested positive for Fentanyl and methamphetamine, the report stated. The female passenger in the vehicle, Lyndsay Alexandria Kitcoff, 39, Indianapolis was charged with Level 6 and misdemeanor drug crimes due to the narcotics found in the vehicle. That case is being handled in Hancock County Superior Court 2.
