Local school supply giveaways coming up

GREENFIELD – Several community groups are offering free school supplies for local families.

Hancock County Community Night is from 5-8 pm. This Wednesday, July 17 at the Hancock County Fairgrounds. The eighth annual summertime event features family-friendly educational booths with public safety officers, firefighters, nonprofit organizations and more. Public safety demonstrations, produce giveaways, car seat safety checks, bounce houses and food will be featured, as well as a backpack giveaway. Changing Footprints will host its Back To School Shoe Giveaway in downtown Greenfield this weekend.

The giveaway featuring free shoes of all sizes is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both July 19 and 20 at Greenfield Christian Church, 23 N. East St., Greenfield. For more information and updates, visit facebook.com/changingfootprintshancock.

Backpack Bash is from 1-3 p.m. this Saturday at Apostolic Pentecostal Church, 1202 E. Fifth St., Greenfield. Students from kindergarten through college are encouraged to stop by and get a backpack and school supplies, as well as a hot dog or snow cone.

Pates Place in Greenfield will host a back-to-school Block Party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21. The salon will offer free haircuts for children, as well as free bounce houses and food at 125 Howard St., Greenfield.

A backpack and school supply giveaway returns to Riley Park from 6-7:30 p.m. July 24. The event is hosted by Hancock4kids and also includes games and activities.

Back to School Celebration is coming up at 12:30 p.m. July 28 at Mt. Comfort Church, 3179 N. 600 W., Greenfield. Join in for free school supplies, yard games, ice cream, lunch and bounce houses.

Stratman named to dean’s list

GREENFIELD – Mary Ellen Stratman of Greenfield has been named to the dean’s list of Siena College for the spring semester. The honor is for students who earn a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.89. Siena College is a private, Catholic residential liberal arts college located in Loudonville, N.Y.

Libraries to host events for children, teens

GREENFIELD – Local libraries will continue to promote summer reading this month.

In Fortville, the Vernon Township Public Library will host Hedgehog Hannah, bringing a variety of animals July 27. A duck and chicken event is July 29.

At the Hancock County Public Library in Greenfield, family yoga is scheduled for this Wednesday, July 17; a family game night is this Monday, July 15; and a poetry event is July 16. Teens can enjoy Mario Kart tournaments and STEAM challenges throughout the month.

The HCPL in New Palestine offers family yoga July 24.

All libraries host story times for various ages throughout the month.

G-C gala event scheduled

GREENFIELD – The annual Red Letter Gala supporting the Greenfield Central School Foundation is coming up this September.

The event is set for Sept. 28 with dinner, interactive displays from grant recipients, and a Wish Upon A Star display featuring future grant opportunities. New members of the G-C Alumni Hall of Fame also inducted at the event. Sponsorship opportunities are open now.

MV program applications open

FORTVILLE – Applications are open now for the 2024-2025 MV Ambassadors Program.

Learn about Mt. Vernon schools with eight Tuesday morning meetings throughout the year.
