HANCOCK COUNTY — An Indianapolis man has been accused of confining, kidnapping, beating and strangling a woman in McCordsville in early June.

Darrell Paul Vaughn, 49, 11000 block of Pendleton Pike is facing two Level 4 felony counts of criminal confinement with moderate bodily injury and three different Level 6 felony counts of domestic battery, strangulation and kidnapping from an incident June 6.

Vaughn made his initial appearance in Hancock County Superior Court 1 where the court set a $75,000 cash bond, put a 15-day hold on the defendant and issued a no contact order.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a deputy from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call on West Charlestone Way, McCordsville on June 6 after someone called in and said their neighbor had been beaten up. The caller told officials the male was leaving in the victim’s vehicle and there was a firearm in the car he took.

The victim told officials she asked Vaughn to leave the residence, but he instead struck her in the head with a fist approximately 10 times, the affidavit said. The deputy noted the victim’s nose was bleeding and he observed a cut on the face. The victim told officials Vaughn then shoved her to the ground, stood over her and stated, “You are going to die today b****,” and then began choking the woman to the point she could not breath.

The woman told officials she finally got away from Vaughn, who had battered her more. According to the affidavit, Vaughn then stole the woman’s cell phone and her vehicle, which had a gun in the center console. While on the scene, officials got word the woman had a daughter who had just reported her car was missing when she tried to leave work, but that her mother’s car was there in place.

Officials noted in the report that the daughter returned the car to her mother with the gun still in it, but the woman’s cell phone was still missing. Officials were able to locate the phone at 38th and Michigan Street in Indianapolis.

According to the report, the victim also told officials she had a protective order against Vaughn, which he had violated that had been served in March 2023, but wasn’t effective until May 2023. Officials say they found a previous conviction for battery against Vaughn.

The victim was taken to Community North Hospital for treatment of her injuries the report stated. A follow up investigation noted, the woman said Vaughn began striking her while she was in a bed, and that she had gotten away and ran into a bathroom closet and Vaughn followed shutting the door, trapping her in a confined space and then began beating her more and would not let her leave despite repeated cries.

The victim told officials, her pain on a scale of 1 to 10 was a “20” and she felt like she’d been “hit by a truck.”

Vaughn was eventually taken into custody and arrested June 28. He’s due back in court July 17 for a hearing. The court appointed a public defender to handle his case.
