A fatal head-on crash Wednesday took the life of 22-year-old Greenfield woman.

HANCOCK COUNTY — Officials with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department (HCSD) say a Greenfield woman was killed earlier this week when the vehicle she was driving crossed the center line and collided head-first with a grain truck.

The accident happened around noon, June 26 at 1855 South 600E, Greenfield. This is just north of the intersection of county roads 200S and 600E.

Officials from the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) say a Hyundai Accent driven by Kiera M. Marcum, 22, Greenfield, was traveling north on South 600E when a Kenworth semitractor pulling a fully loaded grain trailer driven by Hank Evans, 26, Middletown, was traveling on South 600E.

Officials say evidence at the scene made it clear the Hyyndai Accent was, for reasons unknown, left of center in the southbound lane when the crash happened. The driver of the tractor-trailer did not have time to stop or avoid the crash, officials said.

The impact killed Marcum despite the fact she was wearing a seat belt. Evans, officials said, was not injured, remained on scene, and cooperated with police.

Officials say at this time drugs, alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash. The investigation is, however, ongoing.

The multi-jurisdictional Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT), Indiana State Police, fire/EMS personnel, Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office investigator, and Hancock County Emergency Operations Center staff all assisted in the investigation.

“The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reminds all drivers to pay attention to the roadway and always wear a seat belt,” HCSD Capt. Robert Harris said.
