Retired teachers group earns honors

GREENFIELD — Seven members of Hancock County Retired Teachers recently attended the annual State Retired Teachers Representative Assembly where several local members received awards. Receiving awards were Jan VanKley, honorable mention volunteer hours; Sandy Chandler, school bell award/ third place for membership increase; Jim Snellenberger, Hancock County outstanding volunteer; Peggy Carson, outstanding group project.

Hancock County members in attendance were Jan VanKley, Susan Geesa, Sandy Chandler, Jim Snellenberger, Nancy Holzhausen, Peggy Carson and Jim Pentzer.

Elsbury receives excellence award

GREENFIELD – Debbie Elsbury recently received the 2024 Caldwell Award of Excellence.

A member of the Hearts and Homes Club of the Hancock County Extension Homemakers, Elsbury is a respected leader and role model in the community, according to a newsletter from the homemakers.

A wife and mother of three with eight grandchildren, Elsbury is also owner of Mom and Pops in Maxwell. Her career also included administration at a law firm for 30 years, and 19 years of volunteer work with the Association of Legal Administrators. She has served on several community groups, including the Hancock County Ag Association, the Hancock County Extension Board and as treasurer of the Hancock County Extension Homemakers. She has taught church children’s classes, was treasurer of the Maxwell Youth League, and volunteered at Greenfield-Central High School, Mt. Vernon Middle School and Shortridge High School (Indianapolis). She is a passionate volunteer of youth sports, and goes “above and beyond to give back and support various community events and organizations, including 4-H activities.”

Debbie is a shining example of how one person can make a difference through their dedication, hard work and commitment to serving others,” the organization’s newsletter states. “Her leadership and generosity have had a positive impact on countless individuals in Hancock County and beyond.”

NARFE to host meeting

RUSHVILLE – The next meeting of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association is coming up at 11 a.m. July 3.

Chamber celebration this week

GREENFIELD – The 2024 Community Walk of Fame Awards Celebration is scheduled for this Thursday.

The event is hosted by the Greenfield Area Chamber of Commerce. It will be at St. Michael Parish Life Center, 519 Jefferson St., Greenfield from 6-8 p.m. June 27. Tickets are $50 and includes dinner with guest speaker Randy Ollis.

The chamber recognizes exemplary individuals and businesses in the community who dedicate outstanding efforts above and beyond their usual job performance. Nominees for businessman of the year are Jake Adams, Derek Rogers and Mike Manship. Nominees for businesswoman of the year are Kathy Hall, Beth Marsh and Leslie Frady. The entrepreneurial spirit nominees are Steve Long, Thomas Moore and Hart Summeier. Nominees for non-profit of the year are Bentley’s Buddies and Friends, Changing Footprints and Women’s Resource Center. Chamber champion nominees are Jane Barton, Kelley Holden and Louise Thompson.

Women’s resource fundraiser coming up

GREENFIELD – Save the date for The Power of the Purse, an event in support of the Women’s Resource Center of Hancock County.

The event will be at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Bradley Hall, 2 W. Main St., Greenfield. Music and appetizers will be served, with dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. The theme of the event is “Champion Women for Positive Change.”
