BLOOMINGTON — One is starting her high school career off with a bang, another is ending her’s on a high note, too.

Eastern Hancock freshman Bella Sotelo and Greenfield-Central senior Savannah Lake led Hancock County competitors at Friday’s 50th Annual IHSAA Girls Track and Field State Finals at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.

No one had a better night than the Royals youngster.

Sotelo finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.72 seconds). It was the best finish in school history by an Eastern Hancock girl at the state meet. She followed it up with a sixth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (44.42 seconds).

She accumulated all 11 of the Royals points. Eastern Hancock finished 21st overall. Warren Central was the team champion with 57.5 points. Greenfield-Central scored seven and was 39th.

The only other scoring county competitor was Lake, who was in her third consecutive state meet.

She won her heat in the 100-meter dash and finished third in the finals with a time of 12.21 seconds, the highest finish of a G-C girl at the finals. She just missed out qualifying for the 200-meter dash finals. She placed 13th with a time of 25.54 seconds.

Eastern Hancock’s Ellie Meyer, 23rd in last year’s high jump competition, placed tied for 12th by clearing 5-feet, 4-inches.

Greenfield-Central freshman Josie Kinnaman set a school record in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:08.64. She placed 20th.

Mt. Vernon’s lone event was the 3200-meter relay. Emma Gasiorek, Emma Gale, Makenna Laffey and Hannah Hauser set a season personal record with a time of 9:46.16. They finished 21st.

New Palestine’s Abby Journay competed in both the 200-meter dash and high jump. She did not make the finals of the 200, but her time of 25.923 seconds was good enough for 18th overall. She cleared 5-feet and was 24th in the high jump.

Courtney Study, who is scheduled to pitch Saturday for the Dragons’ softball team in the semi-state at Bedford, placed 23rd in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:11.61.

Dragon junior Rylee Hurst was 24th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.86 seconds.
