FORTVILLE — Dark, bellowing storm clouds threatened overhead and Mother Nature ended up playing spoiler, interrupting the Mt. Vernon High School Class of 2024 graduation ceremony Friday evening after a fast-moving thunderstorm hit Hancock County.
A storm hit the campus just as the ceremony started, and seniors began walking into the stadium, but district officials tried to move forward with the graduation despite the shower until the strong thunderstorm made that impossible. Officials opted to pause the ceremony shortly after 8 p.m. and opened up the high school to get everyone safely inside.
Despite the foul weather, the spirit of the night wasn’t dampened, only delayed. Following over a hour pause, the 351 seniors dressed in black gowns trimmed in Marauder gold with sharp, black caps pushed on to be a part of their big night. The Class of 2024 was represented by President Michael Shearer; the Valedictorian was Cameron Sullivan while the Salutatorian was Seth Woolston.
