Mt. Vernon earned a split of its softball doubleheader at Columbus East (6-3) Saturday.
After dropping the opener 7-6 in eight innings, the Marauders won Game 2 10-1.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Mt. Vernon, but due to field conditions from a rainy week, the games were moved to Columbus.
In the opener, the teams were tied 4-4 after seven innings. A two-run eighth gave Mt. Vernon a 6-4 lead, but Columbus East answered with three in the bottom half of the inning.
Mt. Vernon out-hit Columbus East 15-10.
For the Marauders, Shelby Rakosky and Emma Jenkins each hit home runs. Easton Wampler had a double and triple.
Graci Hines and Rakosky each had four hits. Mikayla Oger had two hits. Jenkins had three RBI. Rakosky also scored two runs and had two stolen bases.
Starting pitcher Cora Rush had six strikeouts in four innings. Sophomore reliever Aubrey Lowe suffered the loss. She struck out two in 3.1 innings of work.
In the Game 2 victory, Mt. Vernon trailed 1-0 after the top of the first inning. The Marauders followed with two first-inning runs and scored another in the second. They closed out the game with a three-run fifth and four-run sixth.
Mt. Vernon outhit Columbus East 8-3.
Rakosky and Wampler each had two doubles. Ainsley Baer and Hines also had doubles. Wampler drove in three and Baer and Rakosky both had two RBI.
Rakosky and Baer each had three hits. Wampler had two.
Rakosky picked up the complete game victory. She struck out nine and gave up three hits.
Mt. Vernon (2-4, 0-0) begins Hoosier Heritage Conference season Monday at home against New Castle (1-5, 0-1) with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Eastern downs Tri
With two runs each in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings, Eastern Hancock defeated host Tri 8-3 Saturday.
The Royals improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory.
Addisyn Trackwell had two hits, including a double, and three RBI. Cameron Spegal had three hits and two RBI. Brooklyn Willis had two hits, including a triple, an RBI, and three runs scored. Tatem Adams had two hits and two RBI.
The Royals stole eight bases. Willis led with three. Trackwell had two.
Adams went three innings and was credited with the win. She struck out nine and gave up one unearned run. McKenna Stewart pitched four innings and struck out six. They combined on a three-hitter.
Tri dropped to 1-2.
Eastern Hancock (2-1) travels to Class 2A No. 7 Hauser (1-2) Monday.
Cougars win big at Franklin
Greenfield-Central scored double figures in runs for the second straight game and defeated host Franklin Community 15-4 Friday.
Tied 4-4 after three innings, the Cougars scored five times in the fourth and six times in the fifth.
Josie White had four hits, including a triple, and five RBI. Charlotte Riehle had a home run and three RBI. Alyssa Greenwalt had two hits, including a triple, and four RBI.
Kristen Wineinger, Savvanna Riall and Allison Hornaday all had two hits.
G-C had 16 hits. The 15 runs were a season’s best.
Frosh pitcher Ailea Dowdy picked up the win. She gave up six hits and struck out four.
Franklin dropped to 4-3.
Greenfield-Central (2-3) is in action Monday at Danville (3-3).
