Local roundup: Dragons get combined no-hitter in win over Monrovia

Courtney Study and Sadey Hughbanks combined for a no-hitter and the New Palestine softball team had nine hits, including four extra base hits, in a 12-2 victory over visiting Monrovia Friday.

The Dragons (2-0) were originally scheduled to play at Carmel Friday, but that game was postponed.

At home Friday, Study went four innings and struck out five. Hughbanks struck out three in one inning of work.

Allie Blum led the New Palestine offense. She went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, home run and two RBI. She scored three runs.

Sydney Oliver was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Katie Hirschy had two hits and two RBI. Nyla Lewis had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Ella Holman and Jersi Gross each drove in a run. Gross had a hit and scored three times.

New Palestine got out to an 8-0 lead before the Bulldogs scored their two runs.

The Dragons return to action Monday at home against Westfield (5-1).

Boys volleyball

Dragons back to .500

New Palestine’s boys volleyball team evened its record at 5-5 with a 3-0 sweep of Bishop Chatard (7-6), at home, Friday.

The Dragons won by set scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-21.

On Thursday, also at home, the Dragons lost 3-0 to Franklin Central (10-5) by set scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.

In the match against the Flashes, Jaxon Hinkle and Dontae Thompson each had eight kills. Chase Emberton had six. Eli Greene was part of four blocks, including one solo.

Setter Kameron Engle had 17 assists and a team-high 14 digs. Libero Eli Martin had 11 digs.

New Palestine is back in action Monday at Heritage Christian (1-2).

Royals to honor regional champs

The 2013 Eastern Hancock regional champion softball team will be inducted into the Eastern Hancock Athletics Hall of Fame prior to the varsity softball game vs. Randolph Southern on Thursday, April 25.

Game time is 5:30 p.m., with the induction ceremony to take place just prior to game time at 5:15 p.m.

Pickleball fundraiser

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters will be holding a Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, April 27 at 9 a.m. at the Eastern Hancock High School Tennis Courts.

The tournament will be all doubles play, with men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles divisions. There will be both recreational and competitive brackets, with three levels based on age.

Each team will be guaranteed a minimum of three matches. Cost is $100 per team, per event.

LaBelle named Marian captain

Mt. Vernon grad Keagan LaBelle, a big part of the Marauders 2021 Class 4A football state championship team, was recently named one of the team captains at Marian University.

LaBelle will be a junior running back for the Knights this upcoming season.

After entering camp last fall as the fourth running back, he ended the season as the Knights’ leading rusher and earned Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League First Team running back honors and was a Victory Sports Network (VSN) third team NAIA All-American. He rushed for 707 yards on 89 carries, averaging 7.9 yards per attempt and scored seven touchdowns.
