GREENFIELD
Carolyn Sue (Phares) Haas, of Greenfield, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024. Carolyn was born on May 11, 1945, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Charles Henry and Adela Wilhelmine Bertha (Hoff) Phares, and spent her childhood growing up on the family farm in Shelby County. Carolyn was a 1963 graduate of Triton Central High School, graduated from Butler University in 1967, and received her Master’s Degree from Ball State University.
Carolyn’s love of life was evidenced by her love for gardening, baking, sewing, reading, and her avid support for Butler University – especially Butler basketball. Carolyn was known for her gardening skills and was frequently recognized for her flower gardens and landscaping. After graduating from Ball State, she taught in the local community and later became a popular substitute teacher in the Greenfield-Central school system, with the vast majority of her time spent at Greenfield-Central High School. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and loved spending time with her friends and family.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Shelley (Doug) Rittenhouse; and her son, Evan (Jenny Welnick) Haas. She was a devoted grandmother to Audrey and Aiden Rittenhouse, and Owen and Cooper Haas. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Alice Phares; nephews, Brad Shotton (Christi Duke) and Jon Shotton; and four great-nieces; Madelyn, Finley, Lyla, and Emory. Carolyn was preceded in passing by her parents.
Visitation will be held 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church, 6513 W. 300 S., New Palestine, IN, 46163. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 11, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church; a viewing will take place one hour before the service.
