County swimmers compete at state meet

INDIANAPOLIS — Represented in three events, Hancock County qualifiers competed in Friday’s IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals preliminaries at the IU Natatorium in downtown Indianapolis.

Gus Upchurch, Eastern Hancock High School’s first-ever boys swimming state qualifier, competed in two events.

A senior, Upchurch placed 28th in the state in the 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 4:54.55.

He placed 31st in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.65 seconds.

Greenfield-Central’s 200-yard medley relay team placed 26th with a time of 1:41.25. The group includes sophomore Aiden Michael, junior Colten Mayberry, sophomore Jonathan Grimes and freshman Isaac Johnson.

Those that finished in Friday’s top 16 will compete today in the championship (top eight) and consolation (places 9-16) finals.
