Local college students honored
HANCOCK COUNTY – Students with Hancock County ties recently reached milestones in college.
Sierra Pienkowski of McCordsville recently studied geography and biology of Nicaragua with Carthage College during its J-Term, a month-long period to explore college subjects.
Vandy Bauer of Greenfield earned an associate of science degree in general studies from Atlanta’s Georgia State University in December.
Rhys Deiter of Fortville made the high dean’s list at Millikin University. The list honors students that earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average while earning at least 12 graded credits. Millikin University is located in Decatur, Ill.
Local high schools to host mattress fundraisers
HANCOCK COUNTY – At least two local high schools will host mattress fundraisers soon, raising money for their band programs.
The sixth annual mattress fundraiser is coming to Mt. Vernon High School, with a portion of proceeds from the purchase of mattresses going to the MVHS band program.
The sale is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the school, 8112 N. 200W., Fortville. Name-brand mattresses will be on display at the MVHS cafeteria, with prices up to 50% below retail, according to Custom Fundraising Solutions.
The company will also have a sale to benefit New Palestine High School’s band next month. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 10 at the high school, 4485 S. Victory Drive, New Palestine.
West Point applications available
INDIANAPOLIS – Applications are open now for the Summer Leaders Experience for high school juniors at West Point.
About 1,100 current high school juniors from across the country will be accepted into one of two summer sessions at the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. The experience consists of academics, daily military training, athletic and social activities. Applicants must have a PSAT score of 60 or higher in most categories, SAT scores of 600 or higher in most categories and/or ACT scores of at least 26. Applicants should also have athletic ability and leadership abilities. MPD offers scholarships
MCCORDSVILLE – The McCordsville Police Department is offering three scholarships this year to students interested in criminal justice.
The scholarships are available from a donation; one $1,000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships will go to high school seniors or college students that major in criminal justice or a related field.

MVEF announces gala plans
FORTVILLE – The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation has announced plans for its 2024 Black and Gold Gala.
“Together We Are Illuminating Futures” is the theme of the event set for 5:30-11:30 p.m. April 6 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

Polar Plunge coming up
GREENFIELD – The 2024 Polar Plunge is set for March 1, benefiting Special Olympics of Indiana and Eastern Hancock’s inclusive club.
Eastern Hancock SOAAR, or Something Outstanding About All Royals, is hosting the plunge at Eagle Creek. It is one of several Polar Plunges happening across the state, where friends and family sponsor individuals or groups to jump into the frigid waters of Indiana.

Job fair coming to G-CHS
GREENFIELD – Greenfield-Central’s Jobs for America’s Graduates program is hosting a community job fair April 2.
The event is open to high school juniors and seniors from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and open to the public from 3:30-6 p.m. The fair will be at the high school’s Dellen Automotive Gymnasium.
