GREENFIELD – The race was on Feb. 3 to determine the fastest wooden car in an annual tradition for local families.
The AWANA Grand Prix was at Brandywine Community Church, bringing together nearly 30 local children and their families for light-hearted racing down a metal track.
AWANA is a youth club at the church, and the event encourages families to design and paint cars together. The event has been happening each winter for about 18 years.
The overall winner was among the youngest in the race: Hank Marrow, 3, Greenfield.
Winners were also given out by age bracket, for best design, and for an adult race.
Cubbies, the preschool-aged club for AWANA, had Hank Marrow coming in first; Judah Moore, second, and Asher Thompson, third.
Sparks, for students in kindergarten through second grade, awarded Ella Wood with first place; Lydia Vaughn, second; Micah Salazar, third.
T&T, the age category for third through sixth grade students, had Lucas Steinmetz placing first; Owen Wood, second; and Barrett Flink, third.
Abe Salazar won the adult category.
Design winners were Lydia Vaughn, first place, for a cat-themed car; Levi Moore, second place, for a Minecraft car; and Barrett Flink, third place, for an Olympic bobsled car.
