Freshman Bradyn Volz won the 113-pound weight class championship and three other Eastern Hancock boys wrestlers advanced to the New Castle Semi-State at last Saturday’s Richmond Regional.
Volz (31-1) won twice by fall and then handed Milan’s Matthew Baylor (43-1) his first loss of the season with an 8-2 decision in the final.
Senior Cameron Volz (32-6) was runner-up for the second straight week in the 132-pound class. After wins by tech fall and fall, he lost a tight decision, also for the second straight week, to New Castle’s undefeated defending state champion Tylin Thrine (31-0) in the final. Thrine beat Volz 5-3.
Eastern Hancock’s Zane Badgley (39-5) got to the next round with a second-place finish at 126. Following a pin and win by decision, he lost in the final, 7-6, to Franklin County’s Colin Troyer (38-2).
Also moving on to this Saturday’s semi-state is Dominic Shelby (19-9). He finished fourth at 165.
Eastern Hancock finished seventh in the team standing with 63.5 points. East Central won with 161.
Boys basketball
Cougars remain undefeated
Greenfield-Central’s boys basketball team improved to 18-0 with a 66-47 victory Saturday afternoon at Greenwood.
The Cougars are the last unbeaten team in the state. Lawrence North (18-1) lost at Carmel Feb. 1, 42-35. Carmel handed Fishers (18-1) its only loss on Jan. 27.
At Greenwood Saturday, the Cougars were led by a 24-point performance from all-state candidate Braylon Mullins. Dallas Freeman had a career-high 20 points and Braden Robertson added 12.
The Cougars, leading by four at halftime, 27-23, broke open the game in the third quarter by outscoring the Woodmen 23-11.
It was G-C’s 36th consecutive regular-season victory.
Jake Moseman led Greenwood (5-12) with 19 points. Isaac O’Neal had 15.
Greenfield-Central is back in action at home Friday against Franklin County. It will be Coaches vs. Cancer Night.
Dragons down Cardinals
Trailing by one point at halftime, New Palestine’s boys basketball team rallied to defeat host Southport 73-60 Saturday afternoon at Southport Fieldhouse.
Julius Gizzi had a game-high 37 points, including 21 in the second half.
The Dragons outscored the Cardinals 25-15 in the fourth quarter. Gizzi had 12 fourth-quarter points.
Moses Haynes had three triples and 11 points. Austin McMahan added 10 points.
Southport dropped to 6-10 on the season.
New Palestine (14-4) travels to Guerin Catholic (15-6) Tuesday.
Eastern picks up MEC win over Cowan
Eastern Hancock improved to 8-8 on the season and 5-2 in Mid-Eastern Conference play with a 54-50 victory over visiting Cowan (4-11, 2-4) Saturday afternoon.
The Royals jumped out early and led at the end of each quarter, opening with an 18-13 lead after one and 28-22 advantage at halftime. EH led 43-38 heading into the final period.
Eastern Hancock returns to action Tuesday with a home game against Indianapolis Riverside (5-10).
Gymnastics
Dragons win Rushville Invitational
With a score of 98.175, New Palestine’s gymnastics team won the seven-team Rushville Invitational Saturday.
Lynzie Stiller won the all-around competition with a score of 33.975. She won the uneven bars (8.35) and was second on floor (8.85), vault (8.525) and beam (8.25).
Olivia Frank won the floor exercise with a score of 8.85. She was third in the all-around with a 33.3.
On Tuesday at Noblesville High School, the team defeated Noblesville 95.25-94.1.
Fishers and Guerin Catholic also competed but did not have enough gymnasts for a team score.
Stiller won the balance beam (8.325), vault (8.5) and all-around (33.1).
Frank won floor exercise (8.975).
The Dragons return to action Wednesday at The Gymnastics Company for a multi-team meet hosted by Franklin Central.
Boys swimming
New Palestine finishes unbeaten
Last Monday, Jan. 29, the New Palestine boys swimming and diving team defeated Roncalli and Greenwood at Greenwood High School to finish the season undefeated in dual meets.
New Palestine beat Greenwood 55-46 and Roncalli 83-18 to wrap up an 11-0 record.
Individual winners for the Dragons included, Cade Rodgers in diving (178.20 points), Dawson Lynch in the 100-yard butterfly (58.68 seconds), James Watson in the 100 freestyle (53.89 seconds), Jake Myers in the 100 backstroke (1:04.44) and Blake Hurst in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.92).
New Palestine won two of three relay races. In the 200 medley relay, Lynch, Aidan Kingery, Myers and Liam Fuller won in 1:49.29. The 200 free relay group of Dontae Thompson, Kingery, Fuller and Ashton Turner won in 1:40.97.
Next up for New Pal is the Feb. 15 IHSAA sectional preliminaries at the New Palestine Natatorium.
