Marauders edge Eagles

Mt. Vernon kept its Hoosier Heritage Conference title hopes alive with a 53-51 victory over Class 3A No. 6 Delta, at home, Saturday

The Marauders are 10-7 overall and 4-1 in the HHC. Greenfield-Central leads the conference standings at 6-0 with one game remaining, at Delta Thursday. New Palestine is also 4-1 in league contests.

Saturday in Fortville, an R’mani Wells second-chance bucket broke a tie and gave Mt. Vernon a 50-48 lead with 1:05 remaining.

Tanner Teschendorf, who led Mt. Vernon with 16 points, missed a shot, but got his own rebound. Wells then hit a short jumper for the lead. Delta turned the ball over on its next possession, and Wells got an offensive rebound — off a Julien Smith miss — and putback to give the Marauders a 52-48 lead with 25 seconds to go.

Delta’s D’Amare Hood kept the Eagles in it with a 3-pointer at the 19-second mark.

Smith hit the first of two free throws with 13.7 seconds to go for the final margin. Delta’s Hood had a long 3-point attempt, defended by Smith and Wells, that bounced off the backboard in the closing seconds.

Following Teschendorf, Smith scored 15 points and Wells added 12. Both Aden Daugherty, who had earlier broken a 46-46 tie at the 2-minute mark, and Elijah Parra had four points. Brady Fitzgerald had two points.

Mt. Vernon is back in action Thursday with a home game against Noblesville (15-2), ranked No. 4 in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll (all classifications) and No. 5 in the Associated Press Class 4A poll.
