Jobless rate up slightly from a year ago

HANCOCK COUNTY – Hancock County’s preliminary unemployment rate for December was 2.4%, down from November’s rate of 2.9% but up slightly from the benchmark of where it was in December 2022 at 2.1%, according to information released this week by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Still, the local rate is lower than the state and national average. Statewide, Indiana’s preliminary jobless rate for December was 2.8%. Nationally, the rate was 3.5%.

Hancock County’s unemployment rate was ranked No. 65 in the state. Howard County had the highest preliminary rate for last month at 6.4% while Daviess County ranked the lowest at 1.9%.
