Weekend Roundup: Cougars’ historic start reaches 15

Greenfield-Central’s boys basketball team had its lowest scoring output of the season, but it was plenty enough to extend the program’s school-record start to a season.

The Cougars improved to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 49-44 victory over Shelbyville at Bill Garrett Gymnasium in Shelbyville Saturday.

Shelbyville dropped to 9-6 overall and 1-4 in the HHC.

Prior to Saturday, G-C’s lowest scoring game came in a 54-46 win, at home, over Yorktown on Dec. 15.

Boston Willard hit a pair of 3-pointers and was co-leading scorer with Braylon Mullins, each had 14 points. Mullins scored 12 in the second half.

Braden Robertson tallied seven points. Brady Johnson hit two 3-pointers for six. Dallas Freeman had four free throws and Jake Hinton also had four points.

Greenfield-Central (15-0, 5-0) continues HHC play Friday at Pendleton Heights (8-8, 2-2).

Royals complete MEC weekend sweep

Eastern Hancock’s boys basketball team scored 28 points in the fourth quarter and finished off a weekend sweep of Mid-Eastern Conference opponents with a 60-46 victory over visiting Shenandoah Saturday.

The Royals outscored the Raiders 14-3 in the second quarter to take a 23-18 halftime lead and had a slim 32-30 advantage heading into the final period.

Caiden Willis and Caden Powers each had seven fourth-quarter points. Luke Morris scored six. Willis led all EH scorers with 19. Powers and Kayden Ruble each scored 10. Morris followed with eight.

Charlie Halcomb finished with seven. Eli Manship and Luke Schilling had four points and two points, respectively.

It was the first conference loss of the season for Shenandoah (7-6, 3-1).

Eastern Hancock (7-6, 4-2) won at MEC foe Monroe Central Friday, 41-33.

The Royals travel to Lapel Friday.

MV falls to HSE

Mt. Vernon’s boys basketball team lost 48-44 to visiting Hamilton Southeastern Saturday.

The Marauders (8-7) led 21-17 at halftime, but the Royals were able to win the third quarter 18-6.

R’mani Wells led Mt. Vernon with 19 points, 13 came in the first half. Julien Smith scored 17 points, 15 came in the fourth quarter.

Tanner Teschendorf scored four and Elijah Parra and Tyler Davis each scored two points.

HSE improved to 11-5.

Mt. Vernon travels to Connersville (4-12) Friday.

Dragons lose to Grizzly Cubs

The New Palestine boys basketball team had its six-game winning streak come to an end, at home, Saturday with an 81-67 loss to Franklin.

The game featured four players scoring 20 or more points.

New Palestine’s Julius Gizzi scored 25 points, including 9 of 9 at the free-throw line. He had 17 first-half points. Moses Haynes scored a career-high 21 and hit six 3-point field goals.

Franklin’s Micah Davis led all scorers with 26. Grant Hunter had 20 for the Grizzly Cubs.

New Palestine led 24-16 at the end of the first quarter and 33-32 at halftime. Franklin outscored New Pal 38-21 in the middle quarters.

Franklin improved to 12-2. New Palestine dropped to 11-3.

For the Dragons, Ben Slagley added nine points and Brady Armstrong scored eight. Austin McMahan and Keagan Harrison had two points each.

New Palestine returns to action Wednesday at No. 1 Lawrence North (15-0).

Boys wrestling

Eastern finishes second in MEC

Eastern Hancock’s boys wrestling team finished second in Saturday’s Mid-Eastern Conference Tournament at Cowan High School in Muncie.

Bradyn Volz (113), Zane Badgley (126), Hunter Survant (144) and Joe Hollenbaugh (285) won weight-class championships. Cameron Volz (132) and Wyatt Walker (175) were runners-up.

Cowan won the tournament with 287.5 points. Eastern Hancock scored 256.

The Royals will compete this Saturday in the Richmond Sectional.

Swimming

New Palestine wins Warren Invite

For the second straight year, the New Palestine boys and girls swimming and diving teams won the Warren Central Invitational.

In a 16-team girls field, New Palestine scored 548 points. Cathedral was a distant second with 361.

Among 19 boys teams, New Palestine scored 563 with the Irish finishing second to the Dragons with 316.

New Pal’s girls won five events.

Sullie Leavell won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.73 seconds. Adrianna Huston posted a victory in the 100 freestyle in 59.55 seconds. Lillie Abernathy was victorious in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.21).

Leavell, Chloe Siler, Abernathy and Huston won the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.15). The same team in the order of Huston, Siler, Leavell and Abernathy won the 400 free relay in 4:06.36.

The boys team won all three relays and had four overall victories.

The 200-yard medley group of Dawson Lynch, Aidan Kingery, Jake Myers and Liam Fuller won in 1:47.66. Dontae Thompson, Fuller, Ashton Turner and James Watson finished first in the 200 free relay (1:37.01). The 400 free relay contingent of Watson, Turner, Lynch and Thompson won in 3:39.58.

Watson won the 500 freestyle race in 5:19.47.

The girls team returns to action Feb. 1, hosting sectional preliminaries at the New Palestine Natatorium. Finals are scheduled for Feb. 3. The boys are in action Jan. 29 at Greenwood in a meet that also includes Roncalli.

Gymnastics

New Palestine beats New Castle, Richmond

In a triangular meet at The Gymnastics Company Saturday, New Palestine defeated New Castle and Richmond.

The Dragons tallied a season-best 101.4 points. New Castle scored 96.45 and Richmond 90.9.

Lynzie Stiller led the way for the Dragons, winning the uneven bars (8.5), floor exercise (8.95) and all-around (34.6). Olivia Frank won the balance beam (9.2) and was second all-around (34.2).

Reagan Seal was third all-around (32.55).

New Palestine returns to competition Thursday at home against Roncalli.
