Prep roundup: Cougars win big at Muncie Central

Greenfield-Central’s girls basketball team won for the 15th time this season, the most victories since a 17-win season in 2016-17, with a 55-7 triumph at Muncie Central Tuesday.

Three players scored in double figures. Madison Sonsini led the way with 18 points. Brooklyn McConnell scored 16 and Chaney Brown added 12.

Off the bench, Leilani Forshey scored five points. Izzy Silcox and Addi Herrin each had two.

Muncie Central (1-16) scored six of its seven points in the second quarter.

Greenfield-Central (15-5) returns to action Friday with a Hoosier Heritage Conference game against rival Mt. Vernon.

Marauders lose close one to Mooresville

Mooresville (16-4) broke a 33-33 tie with a bucket with 50 seconds remaining and went on to defeat Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team 41-37 at Mt. Vernon High School Tuesday.

Trailing 36-33, Mt. Vernon’s Kanyonrae Kenny scored with just 27 seconds to cut it to one point, but the Marauders were unable to get any closer.

Ellery Minch led the Marauders with 14 points. Easton Wampler scored 10 and Kaitlyn Laffey added nine. Kenny and Gabby Thomas each had two points.

Mt. Vernon (7-13) is back in action Friday night with a Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup at rival Greenfield-Central.

Girls swimming

Cougars win on Senior Night

Greenfield-Central’s girls swimming and diving team defeated Yorktown 133-50 on Senior Night Monday.

The team celebrated the achievements of its four seniors, Avery Davis, Kersey Hudson, Emily Jones and Cecelia Johnson.

The Cougars swept the relay races getting wins from the 200-yard medley team of Caroline Felver, Sonja Jahrsdoerfer, Taylor Parsons, and Josie Kinnaman, the 200 freestyle relay team of Johnson, Selah Vahle, Jahrsdoerfer and Alyssa Osborn, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Johnson, Rachel Stutz, Osborn and Parsons.

Individual winners included, Osborn (200 freestyle, 50 freestyle), Katie Jennings (200 IM), Hudson (1-meter diving), Johnson (100 freestyle) and Stutz (500 freestyle and 100 backstroke).

The team returns to action Thursday at Shelbyville.

Boys swimming

Cougars lose to Tigers

Greenfield-Central’s boys swimming and diving team lost 114-69 to visiting Yorktown Monday.

Gabe Hall won the 1-meter diving competition and Aiden Michael was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle race.

It was G-C’s Senior Night. The team recognized lone senor Keegan Schmitt, who swam well Monday in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle events.

The team returns to action Thursday at Shelbyville.

MV to recognize Hall class

The latest inductions to the Mt. Vernon Athletic Hall of Fame will be recognized Saturday, Jan. 20 in between junior varsity and varsity boys basketball games against Hamilton Southeastern.

Johna Goff (Class of 2000), Chad Kleine (Class of 1991) and former head football coach Doug Peacock (1994-2010) will be recognized for their contribution to the history of Marauder athletics.

Game admission is $6. The recognition ceremony is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Royals celebrating 50th anniversary

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1974 boys basketball sectional championship team at halftime of the varsity basketball game versus Shenandoah Saturday.

The boosters will recognize players, managers, cheerleaders, and coaches from the team. There also will be a reception in the high school cafeteria after the game for the community to greet the team. RSVP’s from team members to the booster email account ([email protected]) are appreciated to help with planning, but are not required.
