Weekend Roundup: No. 3 Royals get 18th victory

Eastern Hancock freshman Kenzie Koch had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the Royals’ girls basketball team’s 71-30 victory over visiting Waldron (6-12) Saturday.

Koch added four assists, two steals and two blocks.

Ruby White scored 11 points and Sammie Bolding and Sydney Springman tallied nine and eight, respectively.

Springman and Makenzie O’Neal each had four steals. Brooklyn Willis had four assists.

Last Tuesday, the Royals won at New Castle (2-16), 66-36.

Koch had 23 points. White had 18 and 7 rebounds. Bolding contributed nine points. Willis had a team-high 10 rebounds. Springman and Bolding each had four steals.

Eastern Hancock, ranked No. 3 in the latest Associated Press Class 3A poll and receiving votes in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (all classifications) rankings, improved to 18-1.

On Thursday, at home, Eastern Hancock (18-1, 6-0) takes on Mid-Eastern Conference foe Daleville (5-11, 1-5).

Marauders win HHC game

Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team defeated visiting Hoosier Heritage Conference-foe Shelbyville (12-7, 2-4), at home Saturday, 58-49.

Freshman Gabby Thomas led Mt. Vernon with 15 points. Ellery Minch and Easton Wampler were in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively.

Kanyonrae Kenny finished with nine and Kaitlyn Laffey scored seven.

Mt. Vernon (7-12, 1-3) hosts Mooresville (15-4) Tuesday.

Cougars lose to red-hot Flashes

Greenfield-Central’s girls basketball team dropped to 14-5 on the season with a 65-51 loss Saturday at Franklin Central.

It was the seventh straight win for the Flashes.

Franklin Central (10-7) jumped out to an early lead, up 19-9 by the end of the first quarter. It was 24-14 by halftime and 48-31 heading into the final period.

Chaney Brown led Greenfield-Central in scoring with 21 points and also had 12 rebounds.

Madi Sonsini and Izzy Silcox both finished with 11 points. Brooklyn McConnell had 8 points.

The Cougars travel to Muncie Central (1-15) Tuesday with a start time of 7 p.m.

Boys basketball

Royals pick up road win

Eastern Hancock’s boys basketball team won 75-58 at Union County on Friday.

It was the Royals highest scoring game of the season. Five players scored in double figures and the team hit 11 3-point field goals.

Trailing 14-13 at the end of the first period, Eastern Hancock outscored Union County 24-16 in the second to begin taking control of the game.

Kayden Ruble had 21 points. Caden Powers hit four 3-pointers for 12. Caiden Willis, Lucas Morris and Charlie Halcomb each had 11 points. Halcomb hit three 3-pointers, Morris hit two.

Eastern Hancock (5-6, 2-2) returns to Mid-Eastern Conference play this week with games at Monroe Central (7-7, 1-1) Friday and, at home, against Shenandoah (7-5, 3-0) Saturday.

Gymnastics

Dragons finish 5th

New Palestine’s gymnastics team placed fifth out of 15 teams at the Franklin Central Invitational, held Saturday at The Gymnastics Company.

Bloomington North and Bloomington South had a 1-2 finish, scoring 105.475 and 102.025, respectively.

Led by a fourth-place finish on floor (9.075) and sixth-place finish on vault (8.725) from Lynzie Stiller, the Dragons scored 95.8 points. Stiller was 12th in the all-around with a total of 32.475.

Olivia Frank earned eighth on uneven bars (8.025). She was 13th in the all-around with a score of 32.425.

New Palestine is scheduled to compete at Westfield Tuesday.

Boys wrestling

MV wins final dual

In the final dual meet of the season last Wednesday, Mt. Vernon defeated host North Central 55-19.

The Marauders, fifth-place finishers at Saturday’s Hoosier Heritage Conference meet, compete at the Southport Sectional Jan. 27.
