Royals lose to No. 1 Wapahani

Eastern Hancock gave Class 2A No. 1 Wapahani its closest battles of the season, but the Royals boys basketball team fell short with a 52-44 loss to the Raiders Friday in Charlottesville.

It was the closest any team had come to the Raiders since Wapahani beat Muncie Central by nine points in the season opener.

The Royals led midway through the fourth quarter, 42-40, but were unable to close out the top-ranked Raiders. Wapahani outscored Eastern Hancock 13-6 in the final period.

“Our kids really fought,” Eastern Hancock coach Brett Bechtel said.

Charlie Halcomb led Eastern Hancock with 17 points, including three 3-point field goals. Kayden Ruble scored nine points.

Eastern Hancock dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-Eastern Conference. Wapahani is 11-0 and 3-0 in MEC play.

The Royals are back in action next Friday at Union County.
