Preschool open houses coming up

GREENFIELD – Local preschools are hosting open houses soon.

Cougar Cubs Preschool will host two open houses Cougar Cubs East will be 5-6 p.m. Jan. 22 at 1331 N. Blue Road, Greenfield. Cougar Cubs West will be 5-6 p.m. Jan. 24 at 700 N. Broadway St., Greenfield. The Greenfield-Central preschool offers developmentally-appropriate curriculum focused on early learning standards in a play-based, inclusive environment. Greenfield Parks and Recreation Preschool has also announced plans for an open house for the 2024-2025 preschool year. The event will be from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 21 at the lower level of the Patricia Elmore Center, 280 Apple St., Greenfield. Enrollment opens Feb. 22 at parks.greenfieldin.org.

Children’s events coming up at local libraries

HANCOCK COUNTY – Several opportunities for preschoolers and elementary-aged children are coming up at local libraries.

Children can “Read to Cleo” Jan. 14. The “ambassador opossum” from Hancock Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation will be in the children’s room of the Hancock County Public Library in Greenfield Jan. 14.

Other children’s programs include “Silly Slime Time” Jan. 18 in Greenfield; “Hot Chocolate Extravaganza” Jan. 19 in Greenfield; “Winter Fun” snowy crafts Jan. 23 in New Palestine; “I Spy Extravaganza” Jan. 30 in New Palestine; and “Pals and PJs” Jan. 31 in New Palestine. The central library is located at 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield; the Sugar Creek branch library is at 5731 W. U.S. 52, New Palestine. There are also a few time slots available for storytimes for children in preschool and younger; to register or learn more about events, visit hcplibrary.org.

Children in the Fortville area can join the Play & Learn Storytime every Wednesday morning at the Vernon Township Public Library, 625 E. Broadway St., Fortville. The VTPL also offers a STEAM club for first- through fifth-graders Jan. 26 and a middle grades book club Jan. 22. Learn more or register for events at vtpl.lib.in.us.

Children’s choir open to new members

HANCOCK COUNTY – The Hancock County Children’s Choir will accept new members in January.

Openings are available in all ensembles for children ages 5-18 for the spring semester. The group rehearses Monday afternoons at Mount Comfort Church; a concert will be April 6.

Assessments begin Jan. 8 and there is a $10 fee for the assessment. For more information, visit hancockcountychildrenschoir.org.

Teen programs available at local libraries

HANCOCK COUNTY – Teens and tweens might consider local activities at libraries this month. Snowflake weaving is in Greenfield or New Palestine Jan. 8. A chess club will be in New Palestine Jan. 8, 22 and 29; a homeschool writing club will be in New Palestine Jan. 12 and 26. Or students can simply “Chill After School” in a Greenfield program Jan. 25.

A Tween/Teen English Country Dance event for ages 9 to 18 and their families is Jan. 3 in New Palestine. Participants can learn English country dance, the style seen in favorite Jane Austen movies.

“Meet the Bunnies” in an event for tweens, teens and their families Jan. 18. The Indiana House Rabbit Society, a rabbit rescue organization, will be at the New Palestine branch with animals to pet, and participants can make rabbit toys for the organization and earn service hours.

Reading therapy dogs coming to libraries

Bentley’s Buddies & Friends reading dogs will be at local libraries in January.

Therapy dogs are available to help reluctant or struggling readers; no need to sign up in advance. The dogs will be at the Vernon Township Public Library Jan. 20 at 625 E. Broadway St., Fortville. Dogs will be in both Greenfield and New Palestine libraries Jan. 21. The central library is located at 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield; the Sugar Creek library is at 5731 W. U.S. 52, New Palestine.
