New Palestine and Greenfield-Central girls wrestling programs had two champions each at Saturday’s IHSGW Perry Meridian Regional.
The two teams combined to have 12 wrestlers advance to Friday’s Muncie Central Semi-State.
For the Dragons, Ezra Wagner (26-5) won the 130-pound class and June Wagner-Gilbert (32-2) won at 135.
Greenfield-Central’s champions were Asia Bowen (19-3) at 105 and Jasmine Camacho (23-6) at 155.
New Palestine had five other wrestlers advancing to the semi-state. Sydney DeLois (18-2) was second in the 125-class. Madisyn Covington (11-7) and Ella Morris (30-6) were runners-up in the 140 and 145 divisions, respectively.
Jillian Champ (19-9) moved on with a third-place finish at 135. Elizabeth Champ (17-9) moves on after a fourth-place result at 145.
Three more G-C wrestlers will join Bowen and Camacho in Muncie.
Ella Harpold (23-6) was second at 170. Kylie Smith-Foster (25-1) was third at 110 and Keely Allen (12-9) was fourth at 235.
The Dragons placed fifth as a team with 131 points. The Cougars were seventh with 111. Southport won with 203 points. There were 19 teams in the tournament.
Boys basketball
Dragons go 2-0, finish 5th at Furney
New Palestine’s boys basketball team went 2-0 Saturday and finished fifth in the 12-team Ray Furney Holiday Classic in Lawrenceburg.
After splitting games on Friday, the Dragons beat Bethesda Christian and Pike Central Saturday.
Against Bethesda Christian (4-6), the Dragons won 69-49.
Julius Gizzi had 24 points and Moses Haynes added 14. Austin McMahan, Keagan Harrison and Alex Guhl each scored six points. Rigg Mahurin and Ben Slagley added five apiece and Brady Armstrong scored four points.
Versus Pike Central (4-7), New Palestine was victorious 91-48.
Gizzi led the way with 30 points and Slagley added 16. Haynes, Armstrong and Harrison had eight points apiece. Landon Seib had six. Guhl chipped in five and McMahan followed with four. Sam Adam and Liam Atkinson had three and two points, respectively.
Gizzi was named to the all-tournament team.
The Dragons (7-2) are back in action Friday with a home Hoosier Heritage Conference game against Delta.
Boys wrestling
Marauders place three at Al Smith
Mt. Vernon’s boys wrestling team had three wrestlers place and the Marauders finished 19th overall in the 45th Annual Al Smith Invitational in Mishawaka, held Friday and Saturday.
In a 32-team field, Connor Bayliss placed third in the 113-pound class. Eli Broady (126) and Devin Kendrex (215) both placed fourth. The Marauders scored 73.5 points.
Top-ranked Crown Point won the event with 308 points. No. 3 Center Grove placed second with 245.5, followed by No. 9 Cathedral (157) and No. 8 Warren Central (142).
Mt. Vernon has a dual meet Wednesday, at home, against Pendleton Heights.
