Cougars win Spartan Classic for second straight year, Dragons 2nd

For the second straight year, the Greenfield-Central boys wrestling program won the Connersville Spartan Classic.

The Cougars scored 266 points in the two-day event that wrapped up Friday. New Palestine placed second with 222 points and East Noble was a close third with 221.

Eastern Hancock placed 14th with 99.5 points.

Hancock County had four champions.

Greenfield-Central was led by weight-class winners Jett McGuire (120) and Clay Guenin (190). New Palestine’s Shaun Glass (215) and Eastern Hancock’s Bradyn Volz (113) also won titles.

The Dragons had a pair of runner-up finishes from Gunner Butt (126) and Colin Whetsel (190). Eastern Hancock’s Cameron Volz (132) also had a second-place finish.

Eight Greenfield-Central wrestlers finished in the top four in their weight classes.

Braeden Ayres (106), Kannon Zuber (150), Tristen Lanum (215) and Brayden Flener (285) all finished in third place. Jarred Harlow (138) and Mason Thompson (165) were fourth.

New Palestine added four more top-four placers with thirds from Peyton Hornsby (138) and Bryce Doss (144) and fourths from Blake Doss (106) and Jaedyn Jeffries (157).

Eastern Hancock added a fourth-place finish from Zane Badgley (126).

Boys basketball

New Pal splits at Furney Classic

New Palestine’s boys basketball team went 1-1 at the Ray Furney Classic in Lawrenceburg Friday.

New Palestine opened the event with an 83-59 victory over Jennings County.

Julius Gizzi had 20 of his game-high 30 points in the second quarter. Moses Haynes scored 16 and Ben Slagley added 12.

New Palestine led 22-16 after one quarter and built a comfortable 40-26 advantage at halftime.

In the third period, Gizzi had 20 of the Dragons 28 points to give the team a 68-39 lead heading into the final period.

The Dragons hit 10 3-pointers. Haynes and Gizzi each hit four. Slagley had 10 second-quarter points.

In Friday’s second game, New Palestine (5-2) lost to the No. 8 ranked school in Kentucky, Newport, 72-66.

Gizzi led the way for the Dragons with 35 points. Haynes followed with 11 and Slagley scored 10.

New Palestine will play two games today. The Dragons open at 11:30 a.m. with a contest against Bethesda Christian. They will play again at 5 p.m. against either West Morgan (Ala.) or Pike Central.

Girls basketball

Cougars are 5th at Lebanon tourney

After an opening round loss to Mooresville Wednesday, Greenfield-Central’s girls basketball team bounced back with a pair of wins on Thursday to finish fifth at the Lebanon Bloom Bank Classic.

G-C defeated Lowell 49-36 and followed with a fifth-place game win over host Lebanon, 36-31.

Junior Chaney Brown was named to the all-tournament team.

Greenfield-Central (12-4) is back in action Tuesday with a home game against Perry Meridian.

Marauders 7th at Twin Lakes

Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team went 1-2 and finished seventh at the Twin Lakes Tournament held Dec. 27-28 in Monticello.

In the tournament opener on Wednesday, Mt. Vernon lost 45-43 to Tri-County.

In Thursday’s first game of the consolation round, the Marauders lost 49-47 to Chesterton. They came back to defeat Faith Christian, 46-35, in the seventh-place game.

Mt. Vernon (5-11) returns to action Thursday, Jan. 4 at East Central.
