Community Thanksgiving meal coming to Fortville

FORTVILLE – A free community Thanksgiving Day dinner is coming up in Fortville.

The Blazer 88 Foundation will host the meal from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at Fortville Church of the Nazarene, 701 S. Maple St., Fortville. The event is open to anyone who wants to attend.

Founded in 2020 in memory of Chuck Theobald IV, the Blazer 88 Foundation is a volunteer organization that helps veterans with specific needs. Learn more at blazer88.org.

Friends book sale coming up

GREENFIELD – The Friends of the Hancock County Public Library will have a gently used book sale from Thursday to Monday, Nov. 16-20 in the library’s GBC Community Room in Greenfield. The Friends also offer audiobooks, DVDs, CDs and video games. Proceeds from the sale fund free concerts and children’s special events at the library.

On Nov. 16, members of the Friends may shop their members-only preview sale from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Walk-ins can join the non-profit organization at a cost of $15 and shop the preview that night. Pick up a membership form on the Friends’ shelves near the entrance at either library building. All members are invited to a short annual meeting at 6 p.m. prior to the sale.

The sale opens to the public from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 18 and 1-3:30 p.m. Nov. 19. Most hardbacks cost $1, and paperbacks are 50 cents. Children’s books are 50 cents and 25 cents. DVDs, CDs, video games and audiobooks are $1.

Bargain day is 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 20. A standard paper grocery bag full of books sells for $3, a plastic grocery bag for $2.

The library is located at 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield.

Housing inventory down, sale prices increase

GREENFIELD – The residential real estate market was quieter in October for Hancock County, according to a press release from F.C. Tucker Company.

Pended home sales were down compared to this time last year and prices increased slightly. Available housing inventory decreased 28.9% compared to last year. Pended home sales decreased 22.1%.

Average year-to-date home sale price increased 4.1% to $337,879.

Across the 16-county central Indiana region, however, the average home sale price decreased to $295,305.

Spell bowl in Greenfield Monday

GREENFIELD – Greenfield Intermediate School is a site for a spell bowl starting at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 13, and the community is invited to attend and watch.

Statewide, around 6,000 students in grades 4, 5 and 6 will compete in the 29th annual Elementary Spell Bowl competition at 48 sites. The Indiana Academic Spell Bowl is a team concept with no individual winners; each round consists of one team member writing the correct spelling of seven words while competing against one team member from each other school. Each word is graded and an individual scoring chart maintains a running team score as the evening progresses. While students are waiting to compete, they cheer on their teammates. Results will be posted Nov. 14 at iasp.org.

Food distribution program at MVHS

FORTVILLE – The Gleaners/Mt. Vernon food bank is available at Mt. Vernon High School.

The drive-through style food pantry distributes dry, non-perishable food, meat and more to districts in the Mt. Vernon district twice a month. Cars should line up at Door 20 of the school, 8112 N. 200W., Fortville.
