Herb society to learn about Shakers

GREENFIELD – Shakers will be the topic of discussion at the Hancock County Herb Society meeting on Thursday, Nov. 2. Shakers were the first large producers of medicinal herbs in the United States and pioneers in the sale of seeds in paper packets. Janet Stultz and Kathy Locke will present a brief history of the Shakers, and their impact on producing herbs and marketing seeds.

The Program begins at 6:30 p.m. at Lizabuth Ann’s Kitchen, located behind the J.W. Riley Museum, 250 W. Main St., Greenfield, Ind. Light refreshments will be served. Meetings are free and the public is welcome and encouraged to come share their knowledge, or to learn more about growing and using herbs. Rotary seeks acts for talent show

GREENFIELD – The Rotary Club of Greenfield is seeking additional acts for its upcoming Rotary’s Got Talent show.

The show is set for 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts in downtown Greenfield. The benefit show will raise money for the group’s new Peace Park.

Lincoln event planned Nov. 11

GREENFIELD – The Hancock County Historical Society is sponsoring a free discussion on Abraham Lincoln, called The Lincoln Roadshow.

The event, commemorating the 160th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, will include insight into Lincoln’s local impact, including the LIncoln Funeral Train and route it took through Greenfield on April 30, 1865.

Book club seeks new members

GREENFIELD – The Cosmopolitan Club of Greenfield is seeking new members.

The women’s book club has long been affiliated with the Chautauqua Scientific and Literary Circle. The greenfield club, an early “daughter Chautauqua,” has been in continuous operation since October 1894.

The club reads primarily non-fiction books once a month, six months of the year. It meets at 1 p.m. on a designated Friday. To learn more about joining, email [email protected].

Sorority to sell pickles, cheeseballs

GREENFIELD – The Upsilon chapter of Psi Iota Xi announced a new fundraiser – pickles – to run alongside its most well-known project, cheeseballs. Money raised supports speech and hearing, art, literature and music efforts in Hancock County.

The chapter will sell Sechler’s Pickles, a company based in St. Joe, Ind. Sechler’s Pickles sources cucumbers from the Midwest, and all packing and processing happens in Indiana. The chapter is offering a variety of single-jar and bulk products, as well as gift baskets. Cheeseballs is the organization’s largest fundraiser. The chapter will be following health protocols and always prepares cheeseballs in a commercial kitchen with supervision of a food service professional. Cheeseballs will be ready for pick-up or delivery in mid-November.

Cheeseballs are available for order. They are $8 each and come in savory and chocolate chip dessert flavors. Savory cheeseballs can be ordered rolled in nuts or without nuts. To order, text (preferred) or call Ottinger at 317-318-8313.

The Upsilon chapter will also have a booth at the Greenfield-Central High School Holiday Bazaar Dec. 2, to sell both cheeseballs and pickles. No advance order is necessary at the bazaar; items will be sold first-come, first-served while supplies last.

4-H Open House Nov. 2

GREENFIELD – Learn about Hancock County’s 4-H program in an upcoming community event.

The 4-H Open House is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Hancock County 4-H Fairgrounds, Sarah Burke 4-H Exhibit Hall, 620 Apple St., Greenfield. Learn about projects, clubs, Mini 4-H and leadership opportunities. Youth in kindergarten through 12th grade will receive a prize for enrolling in 4-H at the event.
