All four Hancock County high schools will be participating in the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP) 2023 Indiana Cheer Championship Varsity Prelims at North Central High School Saturday.
The Indiana Association of School Principals, Department of Student Programs, sponsors the Indiana Cheer Championship, a series of competitions exclusively for Indiana school cheerleaders. The competition will feature 50 Varsity cheerleading teams from across the state. The teams will compete in Saturday’s preliminary event and the top 60 percent of the competing teams will advance to the 2023 State Finals to be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at New Castle High School.
Eastern Hancock is one of 10 teams participating in the Varsity D division. The Royals are scheduled to perform at 10:54 a.m.
New Palestine, Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central are in the Varsity B division. The Dragons perform at 3:48 p.m. The Marauders immediately follow at 3:54 p.m. and the Cougars are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. There are 11 schools in the Varsity B division.
In 2022, all four county teams qualified for the state finals. Eastern Hancock won the state title in its division. Mt. Vernon placed fourth, New Palestine sixth and Greenfield-Central seventh in Varsity B.
Doors open for Saturday’s event at North Central at 9:15 a.m. with competition beginning at 10 a.m. The first awards ceremony (for Varsity A, Varsity D and Varsity Coed) is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The second awards ceremony (for Varsity C and Varsity B) is at 5:40 p.m.
