College savings program giving scholarships
GREENFIELD – The Hancock County Promise program will give away eight $250 scholarships to eight different Hancock County students.
Hancock County Promise gives free money to students in grades K-6; money is deposited into CollegeChoice 529 accounts; parents of kindergarteners who sign up for the program automatically get a $25 donation if they open a 529 account, and this year is a catch-up opportunity for children in grades K-6 to sign up. In addition, those who sign up may be eligible for the $250 scholarship.

Spaghetti fundraiser Oct. 20
SHIRLEY – The New Castle Career Center Culinary Arts department will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser at the upcoming Shirley Pumpkins and Peddlers Festival.
The dinner will be 5-8 p.m. Oct. 20. Meal will be made by students with proceeds going toward the program. Cost is $10 for spaghetti with school-made sauce, meatballs, garlic bread, drink and dessert. The event will be at the Shirley Shelter House, 210 South St., Shirley.
Car wash fundraiser for EH Europe trip
CHARLOTTESVILLE – Eastern Hancock students are raising money for a spring break trip to Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 2024.

MV superintendent available at local events
FORTVILLE – Anyone in the Mt. Vernon community is invited to join Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker at an upcoming Traveling Talks event.
The events allow for anyone to ask questions or hear updates from the superintendent. Parker will be at Sunrise Bakery in Fortville at 7 a.m. Oct. 19, 101 W. Broadway St., Fortville with complimentary donuts. He will also be at Starbucks at I-70 and Mt. Comfort Road at 7 a.m. Nov. 8 with complimentary coffee. Events are free and there is no need to pre-register.
Pie auction to raise money for EH
CHARLOTTESVILLE – Crafters, quilters, knitters, bakers and Eastern Hancock supporters are sought to help with an upcoming Eastern Hancock Education Foundation Auction.
The annual EHEF Pie Auction is coming up Dec. 15 during the home varsity basketball game. The foundation is taking donations of baked goods, homemade pies, candy, craft/homemade items, theme baskets and gift certificates. Donations may be dropped off in room 706 of Eastern Hancock Middle School by Dec. 14. Parent University coming up
FORTVILLE – The annual Parent University is coming in October.
The free program, presented by the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation, is crafted for parents, caregivers and grandparents from 5-9 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Mt. Vernon administration building, 1806 W. Ind. 234, Fortville.
Participants can take courses on technology trends, mental wellness, proactive ways to back parents and students in an educational environment, English tools and assistance for non-native English speakers and more. Visit mtvernonfoundation.org for updates.
