MV superintendent available at local events

FORTVILLE – Anyone in the Mt. Vernon community is invited to join Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker at an upcoming Traveling Talks event.

The events allow for anyone to ask questions or hear updates from the superintendent. Parker will be at Tim’s Bakery in McCordsville at 7 a.m. Sept. 29 at 6087 W. Broadway St., McCordsville; complimentary donuts provided.

Other upcoming Traveling Talks are at 7 a.m. Oct. 19 at Sunrise Bakery, 101 W. Broadway St., Fortville with complimentary donuts; and at 7 a.m. Nov. 8 at Starbucks at I-70 at Mt. Comfort Road (2776 N. Huger L. Phelps Drive, Greenfield) with complimentary coffee. Events are free and there is no need to pre-register.

Financial aid meetings coming in new year

HANCOCK COUNTY – Support for graduating high school students and adult learners will be available in upcoming workshops about financial aid for higher education.

FAFSA Days will be in January at local high schools and in March at the Hancock County Public Library.

The Community Foundation of Hancock County announced the events along with INvestED and Hancock County LINK. A FAFSA event is scheduled for 2:30-6:30 0p.m. Jan. 9 at Greenfield-Central High School; 2:30-7 p.m. Jan. 17 at Mt. Vernon High School; 4-7 p.m. Jan. 23 at Eastern Hancock High School; and 2:30-7 p.m. Jan. 30 at New Palestine High School. There will also be an event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 2 at the main branch of the HCPL in Greenfield.

MV foundation to host fundraiser

FORTVILLE – The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation will host a Bourbon, Bags and Bingo event Oct. 5. The event is 5-9 p.m. at Adaggio’s, 599 W. Memory Lane, Greenfield. Sponsorship levels are available ranging from $500 to $1,500; door prizes are also accepted. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] to sponsor.

MVHS ranks top in county, according to report

FORTVILLE – Mt. Vernon High School was named to the top 40 percent of the nation’s high schools and ranked 47th in Indiana, according to a recent report by U.S. News and World Reports.

The ranking of schools comes from data from the nation’s state departments of education, including common core data, graduation rates, statewide proficiency test results, advanced placement courses available, college readiness index based on passing AP exams

New Palestine High School ranked No. 76 in Indiana; Eastern Hancock High School was No. 119; Greenfield-Central High School, No. 159.

Lawmakers seek college interns

INDIANAPOLIS – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.

The Indiana Senate Republican Caucus is offering paid spring-semester internships in its communications, information technology, legal, legislative, page and policy offices during the 2024 session of the Indiana General Assembly, said State Sen. Michael Crider, R-Greenfield.

Qualified candidates may be of any major and must be at least a college sophomore. Recent college graduates, as well as graduate and law school students, are also encouraged to apply. Positions are open to Indiana residents, as well as nonresidents who attend a college or university in Indiana.

Indiana House Republicans are also offering similar spring paid internships, which includes free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student’s college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
