Prep roundup: Markley sets school record in Heritage Day Classic win

Eastern Hancock junior Preston Markley broke his own 5K school record in leading the Royals boys cross country team to victory at the Heritage Day Classic in Hope.

Markley won the race with a time of 16:06.10. Teammate Brandon Metz was second in 16:33.2.

It was the team’s fifth straight invitational win. The Royals scored 47 points. Hauser, the meet host, was second with 51. Indy Genesis was third with 83, followed by Oldenburg Academy 84, South Decatur 100 and Morristown 125.

Following Metz, Caden Powers was 13th in 18:53.2. Andrew Metz placed 14th with a time of 18:58.9. John Henry Gray finished in 21st with a time of 19:42.9.

The Royals will compete at the Winchester Invitational Saturday.

Girls soccer

Win puts Dragons in three-way tie

New Palestine’s girls soccer team defeated Hoosier Heritage Conference opponent Shelbyville 3-1, at home, Saturday.

The Dragons improved to 5-1 in the HHC and are in a three-way tie for first place with Mt. Vernon and Pendleton Heights.

The Dragons have beaten the Marauders and lost to the Arabians.

Pendleton Heights host Mt. Vernon Monday.

New Palestine’s final conference game is Wednesday, at home, against New Castle, winless in HHC matches.

On Saturday, the Dragons got goals from Tylar Whitaker, Hannah Sund and Nevaeh Gebhart. Sund and Brooke Tanksley had assists.

Prior to the New Castle match, New Palestine (8-5-1) travels to Roncalli Monday.

Mt. Vernon scores nine times in win over Delta

Mt. Vernon improved to 5-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference and 9-4 overall with a 9-0 victory over visiting Delta Saturday.

In the victory, the Marauders got two goals each from Mattie Isger, Kylie Brandes and Ellie Gawrys. Esther Isger, Aya Renforth and Taylor Bastin added goals.

Brandes had two assists. Ester Isger and Renforth also had assists.

The Marauders, with a chance to clinch a share of the HHC title, play at Pendleton Heights Monday.

Cougars tie Oldenburg

Greenfield-Central tied host Oldenburg Academy 2-2 Saturday.

The Cougars got goals from Paige McCarley and Alyssa Deckard.

Greenfield-Central (4-7-2) hosts Indian Creek Monday.

Girls cross country

Johnson finishes 2nd

Eastern Hancock freshman Sydney Johnson finished second in the Heritage Day Classic hosted by Hauser High School Saturday.

Johnson ran the 5K course in 21:33.9. Teammate Kaylee Swan was sixth in 22:20.3.

The Royals did not have enough runners for a team score.

Mary Fritch of Indy Genesis won the race in 20:56. Indy Genesis also won the team event over South Decatur.

The Royals will compete at the Winchester Invitational Saturday.

Volleyball

Royals win EH Invitational

With victories over Beech Grove, Frankton and Heritage Christian, Eastern Hancock won its own invitational Saturday.

The Royals improved to 18-5 on the year and host MEC foe Daleville Tuesday.

Eastern Hancock beat Beech Grove 2-0 by set scores of 25-10, 25-11 and downed Frankton 2-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-20.

In the championship match, the Royals won 2-1 over the Eagles by set scores of 25-19, 23-25, 15-6.

Cougars go 3-1 at invitational

Greenfield-Central’s volleyball team went 3-1 and finished in third place at Saturday’s Cougar Challenge Invitational at G-C.

The Cougars opened the day with a 2-0 victory, by set scores of 29-27, 25-19, over Lapel.

It was followed with a 2-0 loss to Batesville, 25-20, 25-23.

The third match of the day was a 2-0 win over Whiteland by set scores of 25-17, 25-19. The final match was a 2-0 win over Waldron, 25-12, 25-7.

Greenfield-Central (18-5) hosts Muncie Central for Senior Night Monday.

Boys tennis

Marauders get 5-0 win

At West Lafayette Saturday, Mt. Vernon improved to 10-3 on the season with a 5-0 victory over the Red Devils.

At No. 1 singles, Adam Koon won 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Manny Downs won 6-3, 6-1 and, at No. 3, Tate Cougill was victorious by a score of 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles play, Robbie Moore and Matthew Jones won 7-6, 6-2. Bryndan Wylie and Max Orelup were 6-1, 6-0 winners.

Unbeaten in Hoosier Heritage Conference play, Mt. Vernon (6-0) travels to Delta Monday seeking the program’s first HHC title.

Cougars defeat Warriors

Greenfield-Central picked up a 4-1 victory at Warren Central Saturday.

Ranked No. 29 in the IHSTECA poll, the Cougars wrap up their regular season Monday with a home match against No. 22 Westfield.
