Prep roundup: Dragons lose to No. 2 Carmel, but claim share of HHC title

New Palestine’s boys soccer team lost a 7-0 decision against Class 3A No. 2 Carmel at home Thursday, but got some good news after the tough loss to one of the state’s top teams.

With Mt. Vernon’s shootout victory at Pendleton Heights Thursday, the Dragons clinched a share of the Hoosier Heritage Conference title. The Dragons will look for the outright title next Thursday, at home, against Pendleton Heights. New Palestine is 6-0 in HHC matches.

Pendleton Heights is 4-1 and hosts Shelbyville Tuesday prior to traveling to New Palestine.

Carmel scored three first-half goals in Thursday’s match. The Greyhounds are 11-1-1.

New Palestine is 8-6 over and plays at Franklin Tuesday.

Cougars win in OT at Shelbyville

Greenfield-Central got goals from Gavin Jack and Axel Valladares to pick up a 2-1 overtime victory at Shelbyville Thursday.

Jack scored his goal unassisted. Jeylan Ramirez had an assist on the Valladares goal.

The Cougars are 3-9 overall and 2-4 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. Shelbyville dropped to 3-11 and 1-5 in the HHC.

Greenfield-Central plays host to Fishers Tuesday.

Boys tennis

Torzewski finishes regular season 17-0

New Palestine’s boys tennis team won on Senior Night and junior No. 3 singles player Brady Torzewski finished the regular season undefeated in Thursday’s match against visiting Bishop Chatard.

The Dragons won 3-2 to improve to 10-5.

The team’s four seniors played doubles matches and won both contests. Nick Parrett/Carter Willey won at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 6-0. Trent Ruble/Eli Sloan won at No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-0.

Torzewski improved to 17-0 with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory.

At No. 1 singles, Joey McPike lost 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2, Arjomand Khokhar lost 6-1, 6-4.

Girls soccer

G-C defeated in OT

Shelbyville broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the first of two seven-minute overtime sessions to defeat Greenfield-Central’s girls soccer team 1-0 Thursday at the G-C Soccer Complex.

Greenfield-Central dropped to 4-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. Shelbyville is 10-3 and 3-2 in the HHC.

The Cougars are back in action Saturday with a 10 a.m. (varsity first) match at Oldenburg Academy.

Volleyball

Royals get MEC sweep

Eastern Hancock’s volleyball team made quick work of host Monroe Central in a Mid-Eastern Conference match Thursday.

The Royals improved to 15-5 overall and 6-2 in the MEC with a 3-0 victory by set scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-23.

Monroe Central dropped to 9-9 and 0-4 in the conference.

The Royals are back in action hosting the Eastern Hancock Invitational Saturday.

Marauders suffer road loss

Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team lost 3-1 at Lawrence North Thursday.

The Marauders lost by set scores of 25-12, 25-19, 22-25, 26-24.

Mt. Vernon is 12-10 on the season. LN is also 12-10 overall.

The Marauders are back in action Tuesday with a home match against Fishers.
