New Palestine’s boys soccer team scored two late girls to earn a 3-2 Hoosier Heritage Conference victory at New Castle Tuesday.
Elliott Canova had the game-winner in the 79th minute, just one minute after Paxton Holmes had tied the match.
New Castle had taken a 2-1 lead just five minutes prior to Holmes’ second goal of the night.
New Castle (1-6-1, 0-3) took a 2-1 lead in the 74th minute on a misplay by the Dragons in their defensive third.
Holmes first goal, assisted by Canova, came early in the first half.
New Palestine is 4-4 overall and 3-0 in the HHC. The Dragons play host to HHC foe Shelbyville (2-5, 0-1) Thursday.
Cougars pick up first HHC win
Greenfield-Central’s boys soccer team improved to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 1-0 victory at Delta Tuesday.
Senior Jeylan Ramirez had a first-half goal and junior keeper Jordin Jones earned the shutout.
The Eagles dropped to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the HHC.
Volleyball
Marauders lose close 3-setter
Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team lost a tight three-set match to visiting Brebeuf Tuesday.
The Marauders lost by set scores of 25-23, 25-22, 27-25.
G-C improves to 13-1
Greenfield-Central’s volleyball team won for the 13th time this season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Greenwood Christian Academy Tuesday.
The Cougars won by set scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-9.
Girls golf
Dragons drop 2 to top 10 teams
Second-ranked Westfield and No. 10 Hamilton Southeastern defeated New Palestine in a girls golf match Tuesday at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, host course for the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals later this month.
Westfield won with a 161. HSE shot 174 and the Dragons had 187.
Katie Kelley led New Palestine with a 41. Lauren Deering and Lily Kirchner both shot 48s. Hanna Beller carded a 50, and Lauren Appleby added a 51.
Mt. Vernon splits
The Mt. Vernon girls golf team won one and lost one in Tuesday’s meet with Guerin Catholic and Hamilton Heights at Bear Slide Golf Club in Cicero.
The Marauders shot a 193, 10 strokes better than Hamilton Heights (203) and 11 behind Guerin Catholic (182).
Mt. Vernon’s Izzy VanHeel was co-medalist with a nine-hole round of 42.
Gigi Avers followed with a 49. Kylie Hyde finished with a 50 and Natalie Miner and Aerin Hubbell each shot 52s.
Boys tennis
Royals fall to Bulldogs
On Thursday, Eastern Hancock’s boys tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision to visiting Centerville.
The Royals are 4-2 on the season and are scheduled to play at Triton Central today.
