Pastel, chalk art downtown
GREENFIELD – Pastels and chalk art will be celebrated in an artist reception this Friday, Sept. 8 in downtown Greenfield.
Hancock County Arts will host its Second Friday Artist Reception 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Twenty North Gallery, 20 N. State St., Greenfield. The event will bring awareness to the specialized art medium using pastels — fragile, finger-size sticks that use powdered pigments to create art that appears to glow. Awards will be given to both professionals and beginners. Chalk art will also be outside, allowing people to interact and create their own art.
Pastel art will be on display the entire month of September; regular hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. For more, visit hancockcountyarts.org.
Seger tribute band coming to Greenfield
GREENFIELD – Night Moves, called “The Ultimate Bob Seger Tribute,” comes to downtown Greenfield this Saturday, Sept. 9.
The band is a recreation of the Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band from the 1970s and ‘80s based on the “Live Bullet” and “Nine Tonight” albums. The free concert, part of the Live @ the Rails Series, begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 with opening act Mike and the Boys, followed by the headliner at 8 p.m.
The concert is at Depot Street Park, 251 Depot St., Greenfield.
Gem, fossil show this weekend
GREENFIELD – Gems and fossils can be viewed at the Hancock County 4-H Fairgrounds this weekend.
The 45th annual Greater Indianapolis Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at 620 Apple St., Greenfield. Admission is free and there will be three buildings with more than 70 vendors on site, including beads and jewelry-making supplies, and equipment for cutting and polishing stones. Music, dance events coming to HCPL
GREENFIELD – Live music and dancing is taking place with free, all-ages events at local libraries this month.
Singer/songwriter Sadie Johnson will give a blues concert at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Sugar Creek branch of the Hancock County Public Library. The multi-instrumentalist plays everything from folk to funk; her soulful and powerful vocals can only match her percussive and energetic guitar style, according to a press release from the HCPL. The New Palestine library is also hosting “Line Dance on the Lawn.” All ages are welcome to celebrate the beginning of harvest season with an afternoon of line dancing with Jeff Smilko, starting at 2 p.m. Sept. 23. Register online.
In Greenfield, the nationally-recognized Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will perform at 6 p.m. Sept. 18. Composed of leading professional instrumentalists and vocalists, the IJO was created to preserve the dynamic history of big bands with musical arrangements based on classics from the early 20th century’s Great American Songbook. Fly-in, car show planned
NEW CASTLE – The New Castle-Henry County Kiwanis Club invites the community to the New Castle Airport Marlatt Field Fly-in and Car Show.
The free event is 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Sept. 16 at 2912 E. 400S., New Castle. The Kiwanis Club will serve food from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to raise money to purchase new shoes for children in need. The airport will be providing airplane rides of New Castle (weather permitting) and there will be airplanes and helicopters on display. The Henry County Sheriff’s K-9 unit. will host a car show, $15 per vehicle entry, registration from 10-11 a.m. with many awards and door prizes at 2:30 pm. There will be a DJ, 50/50 Raffle and K-9 demonstration. Proceeds will go to help purchase a new K-9.

Benefit car show, fish fry coming up
GREENFIELD – Mt. Comfort Church will host its seventh annual car show and fish fry Sept. 23.
The events raise money for Lighthouse Student Ministries, for the church’s youth group to attend a mission trip next summer.
The car show is from noon to 3 p.m. with registration at $20 per car; non-judged registration is $5 per car.
The fish fry is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with $12 per meal pre-order by Sept. 21. Meal includes hand-battered cod, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, cole slaw, dessert and drink. Day-of-event price is $14.
