School foundation planning gala event

GREENFIELD – The Greenfield Central School Foundation is hosting its annual Red Letter Gala Sept. 30.

Each September, gala guests see interactive displays from previous grant recipients, granting wishes from our Wish Upon A Star display (an initiative to help classroom teachers); honor G-C Alumni Hall of Fame inductees; and mingle with community and education partners and alumni. The gala celebrates the impact of philanthropy and education on the lives of students past, present and future.

JAG students earn scholarships

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana chapter of Jobs for America’s Graduates recently announced that this year’s graduating class earned more than $23 million in scholarship money. Recipients included students from 52 Indiana counties. In Hancock County, 20 JAG students received scholarships totaling just over $475,000.

JAG Indiana, which is administered by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, is a state-based, national non-profit organization dedicated to helping high school students of promise who have experienced challenges achieve success through graduation. JAG students receive adult mentoring while in school and one year of follow-up counseling after graduation. Since 2006, more than 40,000 students have participated in JAG Indiana with 95% graduating from high school.

Hehar earns degree from Trine

FORTVILLE – Sumandeep Hehar of Fortville recently completed a degree from Trine University.

Hehar earned a master of business administration degree at the end of the second summer 2023 term.

Trine University is a private, co-educational residential institution located in Angola, Ind.

MV foundation to host fundraisers

GREENFIELD – the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation has two fundraiser events coming up this fall.

The Joel Young Memorial Chip-in Fore Kids event is from 2-5 p.m. Sept. 14 at TopGolf, 9200 E. 116th St. Cost is $100 per person; early registration is $560 for six players.

The foundation will host a Bourbon, Bags and Bingo event Oct. 5. The event is 5-9 p.m. at Adaggio’s, 599 W. Memory Lane, Greenfield. Sponsorship levels are available ranging from $500 to $1,500; door prizes are also accepted. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] to sponsor.

Wilson named to Franklin College newspaper staff

GREENFIELD – Sam Wilson, a sophomore from Greenfield, was named to the editorial staff of Franklin College’s newspaper, “The Franklin.”

Wilson will serve as co-spots podcast creator. Wilson is a public relations major, a member of the cross country and track and field teams, and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

The newspaper, founded in 1904, is an independent publication managed by student editors at Franklin College’s Pulliam School of Journalism. It is part of the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame and has been recognized by the ACP in numerous award categories. Franklin College is a residential liberal arts and sciences institution located 20 minutes south of Indianapolis.

EHHS yearbooks available

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Eastern Hancock High School yearbooks have arrived for the 2022-23 school year. Graduates should pick up yearbooks in the main office during school hours. Extra copies are available for $70 each.

Lawmakers seek college interns

INDIANAPOLIS – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.

The Indiana Senate Republican Caucus is offering paid spring-semester internships in its communications, information technology, legal, legislative, page and policy offices during the 2024 session of the Indiana General Assembly, said State Sen. Michael Crider,R-Greenfield.

Qualified candidates may be of any major and must be at least a college sophomore. Recent college graduates, as well as graduate and law school students, are also encouraged to apply. Positions are open to Indiana residents, as well as nonresidents who attend a college or university in Indiana.

Indiana House Republicans are also offering similar spring paid internships, which includes free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student’s college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

VFW promotes national student contests

GREENFIELD – The Veterans of Foreign Wars is hosting two national essay competitions.

Patriot’s Pen is for students in grades 6 through 8 for a $5,000 prize with the theme “How Are You Inspired by America?”

Voice of Democracy is an audio essay competition for students in grades 9-12 for a $35,000 prize with the theme “What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?”
