In a marathon match with some marathon sets, New Palestine’s volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit to defeat host Hamilton Heights 3-2 Wednesday.
New Palestine (7-1) won by set scores of 23-25, 28-30, 25-22, 25-18, 18-16.
“That was a phenomenal match,” New Palestine head coach Kelli Gabehart said. “Every set was extremely competitive and came down to the wire. I am so very proud of our effort after being down two sets. The final and fifth set went back and forth.”
Hamilton Heights had two match points in the final set but the Dragons rallied for their fourth straight victory.
“I’m so incredibly proud,” Gabehart added.
Defensive specialist Azure Flagle had 38 digs.
Bella Brownfield recorded a double-double, leading the attack with 21 kills, to go with 17 digs and three aces.
Three others had double figures in kills, Hayden Ramsey had 17. Rachel Burke totaled 14 and Josie Corbett had 10.
Setter Sam Gooding delivered 65 assists and had seven digs.
Makaeli Johnson and Kyndra Monteith totaled 17 and 16 digs, respectively.
New Palestine plays host to Whiteland in a non-conference match today.

Cougars win first HHC match
After trailing 1-0 early, Greenfield-Central scored three goals before halftime on its way to a 4-1 victory at Yorktown Wednesday.
The win was the first of the year, both overall and in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.
Paige McCarley, Jorja Houston, Ainsley Robinson, and Callie Means scored goals. Means, McCarley, and Loren Bewley had assists. Goalkeeper Jessica Merritt recorded seven saves.
Greenfield-Central is 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the HHC. The Cougars host Pendleton Heights Wednesday.

Dragons debut with win
In the first match on new home courts, New Palestine’s boys tennis team defeated Franklin 4-1 Tuesday.
The Dragons home match Wednesday with Greenfield-Central and road contest Thursday at Shenandoah were postponed due to extreme heat. The Greenfield-Central match has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
