With 5-0 shutout victories on back-to-back days, Greenfield-Central’s boys tennis team improved to 6-0 in the season.
On Monday, the Cougars defeated Rushville 5-0. On Tuesday, they picked up a 5-0 win against Hoosier Heritage Conference foe New Castle. All wins over the Trojans were in straight sets. It was the first HHC match of the season.
G-C is scheduled for another HHC contest today, at rival New Palestine. Due to expected high temperatures, the match has been moved to a 7:30 p.m. start at the new NPHS tennis facility.
New Pal loses to Delta
New Palestine’s boys tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision at Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Delta on Monday.
Both Dragons victories were in singles matches. At No. 1, Moses Haynes won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. At No. 3 Brady Torzewski won 6-4, 5-2 (retired).
At No. 2 singles, Joey McPike lost 6-2, 6-4. The No. 1 doubles team of Max Havel and Arjomand Khokhar lost 6-2, 6-3. The No. 2 pair of Eli Sloan and Tyler Wilson were defeated 6-2, 6-4.
Marauders defeated by Guerin
The Mt. Vernon boys tennis team lost 3-2 at Guerin Catholic Tuesday.
No. 1 singles player Adam Koon won 6-1, 6-4. No. 2 Manny Downs won 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
At No. 3, Tate Cougill lost 6-2, 7-5. In doubles action, Robbie Moore and Bryndan Wylie lost 6-1, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team of Matthew Jones and Max Orelup lost 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Girls golf
New Pal improves to 6-0
With wins over Franklin Central and Greenfield-Central Monday, New Palestine’s girls golf team improved to 6-0 in dual meets.
Hanna Beller led New Palestine with a nine-hole round of 41.
The Dragons scored 177. Franklin Central had 201 and Greenfield-Central scored 237.
Also for the Dragons, Lauren Deering shot 42. Katie Kelley carded a 44 and Lauren Appleby shot 50.
Greenfield-Central’s low round came from Ella Neill, who shot a 46.
Mt. Vernon wins dual
The Mt. Vernon girls golf team defeated Covenant Christian Tuesday 176-213.
Natalie Miner led the Marauders with a personal-best, nine-hole round of 40.
Izzy VanHeel scored a 42. Kylie Hyde shot 46 and Gigi Avers had a 48.
Hancock has low round for EH
Lyla Hancock had a team-low round of 59 for the Eastern Hancock girls golf team in a match Monday against Shenandoah and Knightstown.
Also for the Royals, Emily Hodges shot 61 and Emily Grant carded a 64. The Royals did not have enough players for a team score.
Volleyball
New Pal sweeps
The New Palestine volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep of visiting Greenwood Christian Tuesday.
The Dragons improved to 6-1 overall with set wins of 25-18, 25-12, 25-20.
Bella Brownfield had nine kills, five digs, three service aces and a block. Sam Gooding delivered 31 assists and also had four kills and four digs. Also on the attack, Rachel Burke had six kills. Nyla Lewis and Hayden Ramsey both had five kills.
Ramsey and Lewis had a pair of blocks each and Burke had one block.
On the back row, Azure Flagle had a team-high 10 digs, and also had six service aces. Makaeli Johnson had seven digs and Kyndra Monteith tallied five.
Mt. Vernon wins sixth match
Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team improved to 6-2 on the season with a 3-0 win over visiting Guerin Catholic Tuesday.
The Marauders won by set scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-15.
Olivia Johnson and Alivia Morgan had six kills each.
The team combined for 16 service aces, led by Aubrey Dowling with five. She also led the back row with eight digs.
Sophia Damer had three block assists. Setter Ava Whitmore had 21 assists.
Eastern splits matches
The Eastern Hancock girls volleyball team split matches Monday and Tuesday.
In the Mid-Eastern Conference opener at Wes-Del Monday, the Royals lost 3-0. They bounced back with a 3-1 win, at home, against Centerville.
Against Wes-Del, Eastern Hancock lost 25-17, 25-15, 25-23. Kaitlyn Lowes had 10 kills.
Alana Eastridge and Brooklyn Willis had 21 and 20 digs, respectively.
The Centerville win was by set scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-27, 25-22.
Boys soccer
Mt. Vernon loses HHC match
The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team dropped to 1-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 2-0 loss at Delta Tuesday.
The Marauders are 3-2 overall
Dragons lose non-conference match
New Palestine’s boys soccer team fell to 2-2 on the season with a 2-1 win against visiting Whiteland Tuesday.
Elliott Canova scored midway into the second half to tie the match 1-1, but the Warriors scored the game-winner, on a free kick, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
Cougars lose to No. 1
Greenfield-Central’s boys soccer team lost 11-0 at Class 3A No. 1 ranked Carmel Tuesday.
G-C is 1-5 on the season.
Girls soccer
New Pal drops to .500
New Palestine’s girls soccer team fell to 2-2 on the season with a 4-0 loss at Westfield Monday.
Westfield came into the match ranked No. 20 in the state in Class 3A.
