Hannah Hauser led the way with a 13th place finish and Mt. Vernon’s girls cross country team placed seventh out of 35 teams at the season-opening Valley Kick-Off in Terre Haute Saturday.
Hauser, a sophomore, ran her 5K race in 20:24.
Following Hauser, Makenna Laffey was 45th in 21:38. Emma Gale placed 48th in 21:43. Julia Iserloth earned the 65th spot in 22:17. The final scoring runner was Tenley Benz, who was 72nd in 22:25, just two seconds ahead of teammate Lily Quinn, who was 75th.
There were 323 runners in the race.
Greenfield-Central’s team placed 19th, led by freshman Josie Kinnaman in 15th with a time of 20:29. Lexie Copeland was 90th with a time of 22:49.
Other scorers for the Cougars were: Adalyn Cole (102nd, 22:59), Kendall Barrett (133rd, 23:44) and Emaline Capen (162nd, 25:09).
North Central won the meet with 99 points, getting all five of its scorers in the top 36. Mt. Vernon scored 243 and Greenfield-Central had 502.
Boys cross country
Marauders 8th, Cougars 11th at Kick-Off
Mt. Vernon placed eighth and Greenfield-Central finished 11th at the season-opening Valley Kick-Off race in Terre Haute Saturday.
There were 39 teams in the event. Lake Central won with 100 points. Mt. Vernon scored 254 and Greenfield-Central had 289.
The Cougars had three runners in the top 17 of the race that included 388 runners.
Chris Ross placed fifth with a 5K time of 16:20. Liam Brinkruff was seventh in 16:26 and Carter Crouch finished 17th in 16:52.
Mt. Vernon’s five scoring runners placed between 24th and 70th. The Marauders had all seven of its varsity runners in the top 84.
Leading the way for Mt. Vernon was senior Colin Strachman with a time of 17:00, good enough for 24th. He was followed by Caden Cassada (45th, 17:27), Cooper Huntziker (48th, 17:30), Ahmed Saleh (67th, 17:48), Brayden Strantz (70th, 17:50), Isaiah Njau (75th, 17:55) and Austin Baugh (84th, 18:02).
Following its top three runners, Greenfield-Central got an 89th place finish from freshman Braylon Mumaugh (18:06). Other varsity runners included, Henry Rahe (171st, 19:48), Carter Wilson (179th, 19:57) and Rylan Beavers (198th, 20:34).
Girls golf
Dragons lead county teams at Lapel Invitational
New Palestine’s girls golf team finished fifth at the 17-team Lapel Invitational held at The Edge Golf Course in Anderson Saturday.
The Dragons shot a 357, trailing only Noblesville (302), Westfield (341), Hamilton Southeastern (342), and NorthWood (352). Mt. Vernon finished tied for eighth with a 377. Greenfield-Central was 16th with a 473.
New Palestine was led by freshman Lauren Deering with an 84. Katie Kelley had a 90, Lily Kirchner a 91 and Lauren Appleby and Kate Stanfield each had 92s.
Mt. Vernon was led by the 89 of Izzy VanHeel. Aerin Hubbell finished with a 94. Natalie Miner carded a 96 and Kylie Hyde totaled 98 strokes.
Greenfield-Central’s low golfer was Tanessa O’Neal with a 104.
On Monday, G-C’s match against Beech Grove, at Sarah Shank Golf Course, was called off due to inclement weather.
Volleyball
Dragons off to 2-0 start
New Palestine’s volleyball team started the season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Scecina Saturday and added a 3-0 triumph at Connersville Monday.
The Dragons (2-0) won by set scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-19 over the Crusaders and 25-10, 25-13, 25-5 over the Spartans.
Against Scecina, Natalie Sevier and Josie Corbett each had 12 kills. Rachel Burke tallied 10. Bella Brownfield had four service aces. Sevier added six total blocks.
Azure Flagle had a team-best 16 digs and Brownfield had 10. Setter Samantha Gooding had 36 assists.
Versus Connersville, Burke had nine kills and Flagle tallied 21 digs. Gooding added 15 assists.
Cougars defeat Mohawks, Crusaders
Greenfield-Central began its 2023 volleyball season with a 3-0 victory on the road against Waldron Saturday and followed it up wit a 3-1 home win against Scecina Monday.
On Saturday, the Cougars won by set scores of 25-11, 25-5, 25-10.
Mya Grigsby had 12 kills. The team had 15 service aces, led by Rilee Roland with six. Katie Muegge had two blocks and Finnley Greene recorded 10 digs.
Setter Makenna Rankins dished out 15 assists.
On Monday, Greenfield-Central won 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21.
Royals win 5-setter
After going 1-2 in Saturday’s Morristown Classic, Eastern Hancock’s volleyball team bounced back with a 3-2 victory at North Decatur Monday.
The Royals (2-2) rallied from a two-set deficit to win 24-26, 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-11.
On Saturday, after 2-0 losses to Northeastern and Edinburgh, Eastern Hancock defeated Jac-Cen-Del 2-1.
Against Jac-Cen-Del, the Royals rallied after losing the first set in a 23-25, 25-11, 15-12 victory.
In the loss against Northeastern, set scores were 25-19, 25-14. Against Edinburgh, the Royals lost 26-24, 25-22.
Marauders start 1-1
Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team is .500 on the season after beginning the 2023 campaign with a 3-0 victory over visiting Greenwood Saturday and then dropping a 3-0 decision, also at home, to Cathedral Monday.
In the opener over the Woodmen, the Marauders won by set scores of 25-14, 25-23, 25-13.
Alivia Morgan, Sophia Damer and Sierra Holverson had six kills each.
The team had 16 service aces, led by Damer with six and Aubry Dowling and Ava Whitmore with three apiece.
Avery Delello had 1o digs and setter Whitmore had 25 assists.
Against the Irish, Mt. Vernon lost 25-16, 25-19, 25-13.
Easton Wampler had six kills. Whitmore and Holverson had two service aces each. Olivia Johnson and Jaycee Jones recorded three blocks apiece. Dowling had 13 digs and Whitmore totaled 17 assists.
Girls soccer
New Palestine wins first match
New Palestine’s girls soccer team opened the season Monday with a 3-0 victory at home over Mooresville.
Tylar Whitaker, Bethany Blachly and Kenzie Hacker had goals for New Palestine. Rylee Hurst, Vivian Miller and Whitaker had assists.
Cougars suffer opening loss
In the regular-season opener at Franklin Central, Greenfield-Central’s girls soccer team lost 6-1.
Greenfield-Central took a 1-0 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Alyssa Deckard scored off an assist from Ainsley Robinson.
The Flashes tied it four minutes later and took the lead with just under two minutes remaining in the first half.
Marauders defeated
Mt. Vernon’s girls soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 loss at Bishop Chatard on Monday.
Boys soccer
Cougars drop opener
Greenfield-Central’s boys soccer team began its season with a 2-0 loss to visiting Lawrence North Saturday.
Cougar goalkeeper Jordin Jones had 15 saves.
Mt. Vernon defeated at HSE
Mt. Vernon’s boys soccer team lost its season-opening game on the road against Hamilton Southeastern Saturday.
The Marauders lost 3-0.
Boys tennis
Events postponed
New Palestine and Eastern Hancock each had boys tennis matches, scheduled Monday, postponed due to inclement weather.
The Dragons were scheduled to host Greensburg at the junior high school. The Royals were to travel to Randolph Southern.
Makeup dates have not been determined.
