Mt. Vernon’s girls golf team opened the 2023 season with an 18-hole round of 393 in the Hamilton Southeastern Invitational held at Stony Creek Golf Course in Noblesville Tuesday.

A 13-team event, Mt. Vernon placed eighth in a field that included No. 1 Carmel, No. 4 Westfield, No. 10 Hamilton Southeastern, and RV Fishers. Rankings are from the recently released Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association preseason poll.

Izzy VanHeel led the Marauders with a round of 87. She was followed by Kylie Hyde and Gigi Avers, each with 101s. Natalie Miner shot 104 and Kalin Wallpe finished with a 114.

The round of 393 was lower than any round the Marauders had in 2022. Their best two rounds last season came in their last two meets, sectional (399) and regional (398) competitions.

Led by individual champion Claire Swathwood, who shot a 4-under-par 66, Carmel won the event with a 289. The Greyhounds also had the second-place finisher, Michaela Headlee. She finished with a 2-under-par 68.

VanHeel’s round was 20th overall.

Other team scores included: Hamilton Southeastern 310, Westfield 333, Hamilton Southeastern White 338, Hamilton Southeastern Gray 342, Westfield No. 2 371, Fishers Red 377, Carmel Gold 410, Lawrence Central 427, Fishers Gray 429, Hamilton Heights 463, Guerin Catholic 463.
