Staff report
According to a report earlier this week from FanNation Inside the Diamondbacks, the next step for injured right-handed pitcher Drey Jameson has yet to be determined.
The former Greenfield-Central star and No. 1 draft choice of the Arizona Diamondbacks is on the 60-day injured list with a right ulnar collateral ligament sprain. He recently received a third opinion on his injured throwing arm.
The 25-year old was removed from his last relief outing July 6 against the New York Mets with right elbow inflammation that was later diagnosed as a UCL sprain.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo gave updates on injured players earlier this week, to media covering the ballclub.
According to the report from Jack Sommers, publisher for FanNation Inside the Diamondbacks, which is part of the Sports Illustrated network, rest and a throwing program or season-ending surgery appear to be the options for the 2017 G-C grad, who made his major league debut last September.
Jameson is 6-1 with one save in less than one full big-league season as both a starter and relief pitcher.
The report said a conservative approach to Jameson’s injury would be rest and then come back and throw to test it out. His injury was compared, by Lovullo, to one of former Diamondback pitcher Luke Weaver, who chose rest and pitched well recently against the D-backs as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.
If Jameson chooses surgery now or in a few months, he’ll likely miss the entire 2024 season, and depending on when the surgery takes place could even impact his availability in 2025. It’s conceivable, according to FanNation, Jameson could opt for rest and a throwing program in another couple of months and see where he stands.
In the 9-0 loss to the Mets on July 6 in Phoenix, Jameson entered the game in the fourth inning with Arizona trailing 7-0. He threw three innings, gave up five hits, two earned runs, struck out two and walked one in what was his first appearance since June 29.
Prior to the outing, he had four straight appearances — all with at least two inning pitched — without giving up a run. The stretch that went back to June 15 had gone 9 1/3 innings. He had struck out 10, walked one and given up seven hits.
Jameson was a first round draft choice, 34th overall, of the Diamondbacks in 2019.
