STATEHOUSE — Hancock County legislators received their interim study committee appointments for the next legislative session in January, according to a recent press release.

In the meantime, Hancock County lawmakers will take a close look at current issues Hoosiers face as they prepare for the next session. This includes examining policy topics, getting public input and recommending potential future legislation.

The press release shared that State Rep. Robert Cherry, R-Greenfield, will be a member of the interim study committee on Fiscal Policy, the State Budget committee, Indiana White River State Park Development commission and chair for the State Fair committee.

According to Legislative Council Resolution 23-01, as Cherry being a part of the Fiscal Policy committee, he will help be in charge of data related to the increasing cost of higher education, a multi-year review of tax incentives reports from the Legislative Services Agency and a multi-year review of workforce-related programs.

“Interim meetings with policy experts, the public and legislators have resulted in legislation that’s really helped propel Indiana’s economy and Hoosier families forward,” Cherry said in the press release. “As a member of the fiscal policy committee, I look forward to reviewing and working on important issues related to the increasing cost of higher education and our state’s workforce programs.”

State Rep. Chris Jeter, R-Fishers, will be a part of the interim study committee on Corrections and Criminal Code, Probate Code Study commission and the Indiana Uniform Law commission.

“There are hundreds of bills filed each session and a short amount of time to vet them,” Jeter said in the press release. “These study committees provide the opportunity to take a deep dive into important issues, and this year we’ll begin a large-scale review of our state’s criminal behavior, sentencing, incarceration and treatment.”

State Rep. Cory Criswell, R-Middletown, will be a member of the interim study committee on Roads and Transportation.

Legislative Council Resolution 23-01 lists that this committee will cover responsibilites such as; studying the reduction and prevention of fatalities on roads and highways and other driving safety issues, studying civil penalty assessments and the enforcement of overweight loads as it pertains to the impact on state infrastructure; review proposals to be presented to the General Assembly to rename roads and bridges and advise the Bureau of Motor Vehicles regarding the suitability of a special group to have a special group recognition license plate.

“Indiana is already ahead of the curve when it comes to quality infrastructure,” Criswell said in the press release. “This summer the roads committee will look into a number of issues like how we can reduce and prevent traffic fatalities, and how overweight loads impact our state’s infrastructure.”

According to the calendar of interim meetings as of July 24, the Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Human Services interim study committee will meet in Room 431 at noon Aug. 9.

People of the community are allowed to attend and testify at committee hearings. Most hearings occur at the Indianapolis Statehouse, located downtown at 200 W. Washington St. Hearings are also available online at iga.in.gov, along with calendars and meeting agendas.
