HANCOCK COUNTY – Local families can get a little help with school shopping this month through backpack and supply giveaways.
Here’s a look at where to go to get free back-to-school supplies.
-A backpack and school supplies giveaway will be at the annual Hancock County Community Night this Wednesday, July 19. The giveaway is through the nonprofit organization Hancock 4 Kids; no need to sign up for the event or giveaway, which is 5-8 p.m. July 19 at the Hancock County Fairgrounds, 620 Apple St., Greenfield.
-A Back to School Celebration will be at Mt. Comfort Church at 11:30 a.m. July 30. The free community event will include a school supply giveaway, lunch, bounce house, ice cream and yard games. The Mt. Comfort Campus of the church is located at 3179 N. 600W., Greenfield. Visit MtComfortChurch.com for more.
-Backpack Bash will be at Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Greenfield July 22. The annual event that gives away backpacks and basic school supplies will also include hot dogs, snow cones, popcorn and more. The event is at 1 p.m. July 22 at 1202 E. Fifth St., Greenfield.
-Blue Angel Connect works with local school counselors to get school supplies to children in need. Hancock County schools participating in this year’s BackPack Giveaway include all of the elementary schools in the Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central school districts, as well as Eastern Hancock Elementary School.
In addition to backpacks, Blue Angel Connect may also provide paper, pencils, water bottles, folders, crayons, markers, erasers, glue sticks and headphones; the agency also hopes to have enough supplies to provide a classroom box to teachers as well.
While families in need of assistance should reach out to their school counselor, families that are not included in one of the listed elementary schools may also receive supplies by emailing [email protected], Morgan Verrill at [email protected] or Laura Basham at [email protected]. Include the child’s name, age, school (must be in Hancock or Henry county) and grade level. Assistance is on a first-come, first served basis.
